Coopers freshman coach, former coach with Sully at Cooper, made his way to half court and spoke to the official, not Sully. Not sure what was said but if you’ve ever coached it’s common to insert yourself when the other coach has the ref’s ear so as to not let him push him in a certain direction - whatever the conversation may be.

Now, he did pat Sully on the back when saying something to the ref which I don’t think was the best move as clearly, an emotional Sully didn’t take well to that - evident by his VERY clear bombs dropped towards Coopers bench/freshman coach.. Not the way I want my coach to act towards anyone during a game.

Lastly, I think if the other coach threatens you in that short verbal altercation, I’d probably skip the handshake line too.

Might have a little more to do with players from last year graduating and leaving for other schools? I would say a guy that produced four straight regional championships and was an assistant to Coach Sullivan for 10+ years knows a little about a winning "culture".

Scuffle was not the best choice of word usage there, I agree. However, Coach Sully did take part in some chatter during and after that incident. Definitely not the instigator, but he did walk by Cooper's bench and say a statement that is not appropriate to post on this site. ?I am assuming that it was directed at that assistant coach. 

 

Seems to be a lot of different thoughts on the end of the game happening.  There must be some video someplace on this subject.

Does anyone have any inside info on the scuffle between Coach Sully and one of Cooper's assistant coaches? 

Cooper does have a very talented coach in Holthaus and he will get them back to winning ways just like he did with his girls teams. I will say that if Coach Sullivan was still the coach, there would have been players that would have stayed and possibly others would have come. As you stated, having the players that left such as Roman Combs, one of the best players now in Ohio playing for the #2 team in the state, and Parker Lutz as the true PG would not have made this a total rebuild year when coupled with Knuckles and Philpot along with some of the very nice young pieces from the rest of the varsity and JV roster. I can assure you that they would have more than 3 wins and still been a contender in the 33rd. Again, this has nothing to do with Coach Holthaus who, as I stated, is a very good coach and even better person.

The administration got what they wanted and pushed Coach Sully out because of so-called "Culture" issues so it is what it is. Sully has coached no different than he has the last 18 years and is definitely doing more with less guiding St. Henry to more wins than they've had in the last 2 years. That is great coaching and why he is the best in NKY IMO. 

Great game and the most attendance SH has had all year so good support from both fan bases.

Accurate and a clear definition of "not starting it but dang sure don't have to run from it either". Bottom line is the freshman coach had ZERO business getting up off the bench and saying anything while Sullivan was having a discussion with the official, especially when the coach in question was hired by Coach Sully years ago.

I definitely agree with you, Sixer! Those players that were lost when Coach Sully was let go definitely left an even larger hole than the graduating classes the last two seasons! I was simply stating that, in my opinion, Coach Sully would have a very similar record if he was coaching this current roster. The Jags are just too young and do not have that top tier talent that they have had the last few years. Not trying to slight the Cooper players, as they play hard and seem to have bought into Coach Holthaus, they just don't have enough on the roster this season to compete with the top of the 9th. 

Now back to the game. An absolute classic of a game with everything you could want from an entertainment perspective! Two closely matched teams playing hard, coaches getting after it, and an amazing ending! Congrats to the Cru for the win!

Because the Cooper coach only spoke to the ref - not Sully. It’s common practice for coaches to catch the ref’s ear on timeouts at the half court line. It’s also common practice for one coach to approach the ref when the other is getting a chance to talk to him - it’s just strategy to interrupt the conversation or put in a word. It also doesn’t matter whether he’s a freshman coach or former Sully staff.. He’s on the varsity bench for Cooper plain and simple.

You can make it seem like more than that if you want to, but those are just the facts.

As an assistant I have had an official to tell me to sit down......he said he only talked to HEAD coaches lol.
