What is the 9th Region record for scoring differential?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have this obscure stat?  CovCath is 9-0 in the 9th w/ an average victory of 37.1 PPG.  That's sheer insanity.  I'm guessing if this holds for the next two weeks that it will be a record.

Is this just against 9th region teams or their whole schedule?

Whole schedule avg margin of victory is 33.2 ppg, which is pretty remarkable too.

Definitely a very impressive and dominating showing by Covcath this year. It’s a perfect combination of Covcath being an absolute great team, and the overall 9th region being down this year compared to the last few years. So I would say there is a good chance this Covcath team would have the record  if that stat is kept, because they have been making it look easy against the 9th and most teams they have played.

I’m not so sure the 9th is down, or down of any significance.  Ryle, Highlands, Conner and Lloyd are all very good teams. I think CovCath is just THAT good! Their margins against out of region competition is very similar.

I would agree to disagree with you on that. As all the teams you just mentioned are not as good as the Lloyd team last year, Newport, Cooper. As even the talent on those teams you mentioned don't really compare to what those teams had the last few years. As the teams I just mentioned in Newport, Cooper, and possibly Lloyd would have been able to at least compete with this years CovCath team.

This year we have CovCath, and then a big drop off. Then a lot of teams that are solid, and all compared to each other are very similar and make for good games though. However, it is not the same as some of the top talent with multiple teams the last few years.

There is some parity among a handful of teams, but the talent level is down.

Good points! Cooper was amazing last year.

? If the data set is limited to 9th Region championship teams in "The Riherds Era," the 2017/18 Cov Cath squad holds the "modern record" with a 31.3 ppg differential.

# Team Avg+ (R9 W-L) Sweet 16 finish.

1. 17/18 Cov Cath 31.3 (16-1) Champion

2. 21/22 Cov Cath 31.2 (12-0) Semi-finalist

3. 19/20 Cov Cath 25.8 (17-0) *Cancelled*

4. 18/19 Cov Cath 23.1 (15-3) Round 1

5. 23/24 Newport 21.8 (19-1) Round 1

6. 07/08 Holmes 21.6 (15-1) Finalist

7. 16/17 Cooper 20.6 (18-1) Finalist

8. 20/21 Highlands 19.8 (15-3) Champion

9. 14/15 Cov Cath 19.6 (17-1) Semi-finalist

10. 03/04 Cov Cath 19.3 (16-0) Semi-finalist

12. 97/98 Highlands 18.7 (16-0-2?) Quarter-finalist

13. 15/16 New Cath 18.6 (20-2) Semi-finalist

14. 98/99 Highlands  17.3 (14-3) Round 1

15. 22/23 Newport 16.7 (20-3) Round 1

20. 24/25 Cooper 14.0 (15-0) Quarter-finalist

21. 12/13 Holmes 13.4 (16-2) Quarter-finalist

22. 05/06 Cov Cath 12.9 (13-2) Round 1

23. 09/10 Newport 12.7 (19-4) Round 1

27. 01/02 Ryle 5.8 (12-7) Round 1

28. 00/01 Highlands 5.2 (12-6) Round 1

*?* The 97/98 Highlands and 99/00 New Cath teams are each missing two results. The average here is calculated on posted scores.

I wonder about the 89-90 Holmes team.  I know they predate the Riherds scoreboard era, but they were a machine in NKY.  But, that was 35+ years ago and memory fades a little...

The ninth region is down and is a factor in this. There isn't one team that can give Cov Cath a competitive game and that is a significant factor in this margin of victory stat.

If you look at the 17/18 CCH  team that holds the record, there was only one team that could compete with them in the ninth region that year  - Cooper. Take out the 3 games CCH and Cooper played and the CCH  margin goes from 31.3 to 36.4. So having 1 or 2 teams in the region who could give CCH a game, perhaps beat them, could change margin 5-10 points.

This year’s CCH team might be the best, but lack of even one team in the region that can compete with them inflates their margin of victory.

I researched and found the 89-90 Holmes team that won the 9th and finished as state runner-up, went 24-1 against 9th Region opponents (which included Scott, Campbell and SK at the time).  Averaging 96.6pts/game, while giving up 70.8, for a margin of 25.8, which would tie the 19-20 Cov Cath team for third on the list.  I knew they scored a bunch, didn't realize they gave up over 70ppg.
