The Tigers' (12-4) win sets up a great semifinal Friday night with the host Indians at 7:45 on George Schneider Court. Holy Cross defeated Dayton 61-21 to advance.

The Thoroughbreds (4-11) have another tough matchup at Lloyd Memorial on Monday.

The Breds are struggling.

To put it mildly. The lack of effort on defense was glaringly obvious. The whole offense is predicated on shooting 3s but when you can't get an open look and don't set screens to get open looks it's not going to work. Beechwood attacked the rim on missed shots and on cuts to the basket. Lack of rebounding ability by the Breds has been an issue all season and it reared it's ugly head again last night. The Tigers were all over the boards, flying around. 

I don't understand running the same offense that can't create offense against more talented teams. The scouting report on NewCath is play a 2-3 zone or loose man to man. 

Beechwood vs Holy Cross should be a doozy.

RO - Just wanted to clarify for you the gym is called the Monsignor Finn Activity Center not George Schneider Court. ?

* Semifinals on Friday should be a couple solid games.

Was a little disappointed that NCC didn't keep this more close. I was there was agree with all your points. Seemed like turnovers hurt them last night. You obviously see more NCC games than I do. I know NCC played a great first half at Ryle the other day and thought maybe they found something. Give Beechwood credit they took it to the Breds. Look forward to playing the Tigers on Friday night!

I thought I'd seen Coach Schneider's name painted on signage at The Finn, hence George Schneider Court. ?

In a tribute to my wrongness (in many things), for years I thought the gym at Holmes was named after Tom Ellis. @allsport71 steered me in the right direction. Now it's "historic David Evans Fieldhouse" whenever the opportunity arises. ?

On a related note, I was saddened to learn way after the fact that Bill Rieger had passed away. For those outside the HC family - Bill was a member of Coach Schneider's state runner-up team and later the Head Frosh, then Head JV and Assistant Varsity coach at Cov Cath under Maile and Schneider. One of my favorites while roaming the halls at Park Hills. ?

RO- you are correct. The playing floor is called "George Schneider Court". The gym is called "The Monsignor Finn Activity Center"!

What changed? I heard they had a really good summer ball season in June.

No. I asked what was going on with NCC since several NCC parents who attended multiple summer session games said they looked really good. But thanks for chiming in.

IMO, Coach Luhn is a great guy but he has not had the talent / depth to play the style he wants to play.  He has had talented players but not enough to run with most teams.  I know people hate the style but if they want to be successful they need to learn how to play defense and slow the game down.  They don’t have any Ronny Dawn’s or Drew MacDonald’s walking the halls.

I’ve been told they had an awesome summer as well. I wasn’t there for that so I’m not sure. I just know, that when they do get stops on defense they generally turn the ball over or fail to score on that possession. They certainly don’t swing the ball fast enough if they’re trying to find an open 3.

In the football job thread I pointed out how both the football program and basketball program have had significantly reduced success in the past decade (football since fall of 2015, basketball since spring of 2017). And besides 1 All A regional tournament championship, the girls basketball program has really had reduced success since the 2015/2016 season. I just don't think you can ignore the idea that such an across-the-board drop off has to do with school-level phenomenon. The response I am likely to get is "well, the talent isn't there." Then where did it go? Why isn't it? Because for a long stretch NCC had the combination of players and coaching to be much more competitive than they are in all 3 sports I mentioned. I think it is dismissive to say it is a matter of luck in getting talent.
