nkypete Posted November 8 Posted November 8 On Friday, November 14 at 7:00 p.m., the #2 seed in 1A District 3 Newport Wildcats (7-4) visit the #1 seed in 1A District 4 Covington Holy Cross Indians (11-0). This is the second round of the playoffs. The game will be played at Scott High School. Newport beat Ludlow 42-2 and Holy Cross beat Dayton 54-6 in the first round. Start the discussion. 1
Honey Badger Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Knowing families from both schools. I just want to see a great game. I want to see Newport get the win but I see Holy Cross doing so.
hrcarrier Posted November 8 Posted November 8 This is probably one of the better second round games coming up. I wouldn’t be surprised if either wins but I think Holy Cross likely does. 1
The Double Deuce Posted November 8 Posted November 8 I think this is a great opportunity for hard working kids from two non-traditional football powers to push into the 3rd round. Give me HC by 10-14. 4

Bac2369 Posted November 8 Posted November 8 Newport might possibly be the toughest team Covington Holy Cross has seen so far. Bracken County is close but I myself is leaning that way. Newport will have some speed on both sides of the ball that might give them some trouble. 2
PanthersProwling Posted November 8 Posted November 8 This should be a great game! Give me the Wildcats in a hard fought battle! 2

HC has a state title to their name and Newport has had some really great teams in the past. I feel like you could make a pretty good list of players to come out of both schools. 3

Newport needs to force a turnover or two to help their offense out with either field position, time of possession, or eliminating a crucial Holy Cross possession on offense. They need a big play to go their way at the right time. I think they got some guys that can make a play. 1

There are a bunch of teams across the state across many years that remember the time they played either of these teams. Even without a State Title or deep playoff runs. 1

I think Newport (and Holmes) may have at least one "Mythical" State Title to their credit from the way, way back. The Wildcats used to travel to Atlanta, Birmingham, etc. for post-season bowl games. There was talk around that time of forming a superconference stretching from Ashland to Louisville (Male and Manual), maybe Owensboro and the old Lexington HS (Henry Clay), that included Newport and Holmes. That would have been amazing. Some long traditions at the river schools. Respect. 2

The names alone from Holmes and Newport would have be legendary. You add in the other schools and it would have been a power conference. But, that was long ago. As a high school fan I appreciate your knowledge of the game runcible owl. I went to a river city school and they did alright in ‘75.. 2
DiamondGator23 Posted November 10 Posted November 10 Would rather Newport pull it out, I think HC is just better. Indians pull away late, 34-20
Honey Badger Posted November 10 Posted November 10 Been thinking about this one. I said I want Newport to win but I think that Holy Cross does so. I need to back track on that. Since Newports game vs NCC it looks like they have pivoted on offense. Maybe it was a glimpse of something they saw during the NCC game that led to this. Inserting #21 Jaden Conley into the QB1 position I think has changed Newports offense. I think they are a better team with someone that can distribute the ball to playmakers like Barber, Sharp and Jackson rather than just them trying to make something happen straight from the QB position alone. If they can get the ball into those kids hands in open space they are dangerous. I know the Bellevue game was by no means a productive night on offense but I think they are well past that one now. I think they can get the spark they need to pull this one out vs Holy Cross. Barber, Sharp and Jackson are also legit ball hawks on the defensive side of the ball. They match up extremely well with Holy Cross' skill players. Except for Hunt, but not many in NKY do. I see Sean Hurry having a big night being a huge problem for Holy Cross in this one and him rallying HIS defense. No turnovers and wrap up. #5 Roper, #6 Holder or #8 Harrington are going to make a big play for their team when they really need it. If Newport's defense can keep Ferguson contained to inside the pocket and put some pressure on him, this is Newport's game. Give me Th' Port 28-24. @DRKARK I think you swayed me here. 4

I want to try to keep up with. Juggs first though lol 2
