Surely Bowling Green wasn’t missing a Mr. Football candidate for the overwhelming majority of the Owensboro Catholic game….

But I guess hypothetical victories only work the Apollo way. 

In truth, Apollo should worry about just making it past Barren County.  It’s been 20 years since they’ve even gotten to the second round.

I agree, my son plays for the Devils and we are only thinking one thing....."One game at a time." However, as I've said since day 1. The Eagles are a sneaky dangerous team. If they get it together and it looks like they "may" be getting it together. 

The OCath/BG game head scratcher to me is not missing the Mr. Football Candidate, but what happened to the Smith kid? Did he not play either? One more thing on BG, Is Greenwood that good or is BG just down enough for Greenwood to compete?

Jaxen Smith did not play in the OCath game.  Ethan Kirkwood SR WR was knocked out of that game also with a concussion.  Smith was injured prior to that game.

Is Greenwood that good?  I think they are a very underrated team.  They are well coached and were tired of hearing about the streak and played perhaps their best game of the season.  GW has multiple seniors this year that are good players and their lines outplayed BGs for stretches during the game.  Davis Chaney is a good player and made tough plays.  Their defense is a really good unit.

Is BG just down enough for GW to compete?  

Those holding penalties were killers.  The ones on the WRs were 100% holding.  There were 2 of these.  I went back and watched those plays.  But the ones on the interior line, I didn't see on replay.  Take that for what it is.  There were 3 of these.  But IMO that's 14 points off the board because of them.  

BG has simply had to adjust from before the opening snap of the Rafferty's Bowl due to a number of factors and they are not done yet.  I also don't believe they are the best version of themselves yet.  Still evolving.  Much like the 2020 Covid Year Team.

BG would have beaten Catholic if they had started the Freshman, Anthony Davis, at QB.  They, like most teams would have, did not realize how poorly QB play would be to the point to trust a Freshman to open the season.  BG still has not played a single game with a complete roster.  Last week against Greenwood, BG was without their starting Defensive Tackle and their versatile two way starter Jaxen Smith.  My understanding is both will be available and back in action this Friday against Grayson Co. If BG were to host Apollo and lose in round 2, then that would be one of the worst losses in recent program history.

If all those kids are back then Apollo will have a tough 2nd round. Might retract what I said not just for Apollo but for us at Owensboro.

I agree on the surface. Offensively in 20, they were not solid in any stretch of that though and I have a feeling that is what 88 is referencing. They may not get to where they want to be this year - it happens. Even the best teams in the state don't win the title year after year.  But even if they don't get right, I have a hard time seeing Apollo being the one to knock them down. I guess it could happen, but color me very skeptical.

First, I respect your opinion.  Second, "can't" is a strong word.

When comparing the two teams there are certainly differences which you have highlighted but allow me to paint the picture I was trying to.

The teams you mentioned BG beating:

St X - this was the first game of the season in 2020 during Covid; BG wasn't missing it's best player or players during this game.  

South Warren - Aw, the Spartans.  They played twice this season.  BG lost by 3 at BG in October but turned the table in the playoffs winning by 17.

At CovCath - a very difficult game.

BUT the South win was in November.  The CovCath win was in December.  Meaning games yet to be played by this 2025 team (I hope).

Similarities of the teams include 2025 injuries with 2020 Covid illnesses/quarantines and QB Conner Cooper played/missed some time with a fractured wrist late in the season.  So, both teams had to overcome significant obstacles.

Their schedules don't align and cause some of the differences you mention.  The first four games of those seasons:

2020:  W at X 14-0; W at PRP 24-6; L vs South 10-7; W vs McCracken County 28-12.  

2025:  L vs Ocath 23-17; L vs St X 27-10; L at Scott County 35-28; L at South 45-14;

In the end, I feel the seasons are comparable to a degree, but LOT of football left to play.  And my hope is this team continues to evolve the way that 2020 team did to be better at the end of the season than the beginning!

I think perhaps the real topic that has been missed is Greenwood. 

• The Gators have played South Warren (a pretty solid Top 3 team in 6A) better than anyone else other than Manual.
• They lost by 1 to a Logan Co. team that now looks like it is licking its chops to get another shot at Tilghman. 
• They took BG to the wire. 

If there is someone with a resume to worry about, I would argue the Gators are wondering why y'all are talking about Apollo.

All fair points, but with Greenwood the issue is zero - the number of wins they have over Bowling Green, and the number of wins they have over Owensboro. A combined 0-49 against the pair.  Gonna have to see the ball go through the hoop, to use a different sport metaphor, before you can get too jazzed about Greenwood.

Well we are about to find out how good the Madisonville win was for Apollo. At one point Apollo led by 17 points. Then as I’m watching my sons hudl video, flags are flying everywhere for about 8 minutes and lo and behold the Madisonville takes a 3 point lead then Apollo scores 21 points in like 1 minute. Crazy game to say the least. 
Apollo got better. I wouldn’t say they would beat us right now but the game would have be a little closer. 
 

This team , if they wake up, can be dangerous, but only winning 4 playoff games in 50 years it’s probably hard to wake up.
