Manual 33 Atherton 21

Manual starting to show some teeth...

Will have to read into this one more but I expected this to be a good game and looks like it was. Hats off to Atherton for the improvement shown in recent years. Manual, however, still got the win as I expected.

Atherton played very well and has exceptional team speed. There was a pass break  on a third down in the second half where Atherton was called for a personal foul for hitting the receiver and separating the ball. Looked a lot like football. It kept a Manual scoring drive. The call changed the game.

The Ravens had two 60+ pass plays for touchdowns one of which was a double pass. They struggled to run the ball and the line allowed the QB to get hit often on pass plays. Very sloppy game between both teams with many penalties on both sides. Ravens are truly loaded with talent at the skill positions like most years but time has showed it isn’t enough before. A couple of very questionable decisions to not punt the ball in your own territory is what changed the game not the officials.

Did not see the play or the call.  Some of the "Old highlight reel plays" have been removed from the HS game.  Believe it's called "Defenseless Player."

It puts the defensive player in an impossible position. The defender has two options.

1.  Tackle the receiver prevent a large gain/touchdown but also get a penalty for tackling a defenseless player.

2.  Not tackle the receiver to avoid the penalty  and give up a big catch potentially a touchdown

3rd OPTION:

Coaches, LEARN the Rule, TEACH the Rule to the Players as to how to tackle the Player correctly so as not to draw a flag.

Simple.

I have seen it called for tackling a receiver on a bang/bang play and not a hit to the head or high.  There is no teaching or not teaching about tacking.  It is a no win for the defensive player.

There was nothing dirty about the hit. (I actually saw it.) It was just like RVaughn described above. No idea how to coach a kid to "tackle the player correctly" (softly) running at full speed in a hotly contested game.
