High School Football - 2 Head Coaches Fired!

Featured Replies

I ran across the following article titled:  Two High School Coaches Fired After First Game of Season

Two High School Coaches Fired After First Game Of Season

Story 1:  Banks County High School in Georgia fired 2nd year Coach Todd Winter after falling in their first game of the year.  The Superintendent went with the Offensive Coordinator as new coach for Week 2.

Story 2:  Bishop Montgomery High School located in Torrance, CA let go of 16-year veteran Coach Ed Hodgkiss after a Week 1 loss.  There was evidently a fight in that game resulting in disqualified players for their next game vs Nation's #1 Mater Dei.

These just seemed to be out of place to me.  But I surely don't know all the details.  I found this entertaining and thought you might too!

Am thankful for my team/our teams here in KY!

I'd venture to say these firings had little to do with the game outcomes.

They have a whole mess of a situation going on at Bishop Montgomery right now, evidently. Surrounding Hodgkiss' firing they have already self-reported numerous violations to the athletic association regulations in California and yesterday the school went ahead and forfeited the rest of the entire 2025 football season.

I was just glad to make sure I wasn't one of the two guys that got fired. I will get back to work on the Admirals.

Georgia football is a big money game, with numerous coaches pulling $140K and $150K salaries, and a handful making upwards of $200K. Coach Winter evidently wasn't making anywhere near that - his publicly reported salary for 2024 was just shy of $66K. However, I think some of those salaries speak to the amount of attention given to football around the state.

My understanding is that Banks County was expecting their next coach to take some big steps forward with their football program, and Winter was told that in no uncertain terms when he interviewed and was hired prior to the 2024 season.

For a little background, Banks County had been seeing some mediocre success in football during the 2010s with some 6-5 and 7-3 seasons, but then starting in 2019 they took a serious skid with three losing seasons in a row and a collective 6-25 record to show for it. They crawled back to 5-5 in 2022 and then 4-6 in 2023. Then came Coach Winter, who was hired with the expectation of big advances. Last year (his first season as their head coach) Banks County went 2-8. After that the football roster dropped from around 80 in 2024 to around 40 at the start of 2025. Then in the season opener they had their butts handed to them 42-21, only attempting 1 pass in the game and having East Hall roll up almost 600 yards of offense on them. Right or wrong, that was enough for the athletic department and they cut the cord.

Ed Hodgkin is a former Morehead State WR coach.

I think your fine coach, especially if you keep that award  winning podcast coming out on time each week.

I immediately think about the seniors on that team that will lose their last year of football and likely never get to play again. Terrible. Forfeiting the season harms so many innocent people.

It states in the article that the coach's name is Ed Hodgkiss.  Could be a misprint but my guess is it is 2 different people.

It is Ed Hodgkiss, I have fat fingers and a small phone.

Color me impressed CWB!

Are you now a Peach State resident?

Banks County is a little stretch from my comfort zone but not too far.. we lived in Lawrenceville (Collins Hill) for a good while, so I am pretty familiar with Gwinnett County and the Atlanta metro, but we made the move to Milledgeville/ Central Georgia area a few years ago. I am very familiar with the Athens area though.. my nephew just graduated from Prince Avenue and is now at UGA.

Got you.  And definitely correct on the WR coach at Morehead.

Nahh, haha. I have a friend who's on the football staff down at Valdosta State, though. Plus a couple of my football coach friends from around central Kentucky are tight with some of the coaches who have made their way to the Peach State from that area...and a high school canning their coach after Week 1 is definitely news enough to get some conversations going in a lot of circles.
