I highly doubt it. His son will be a senior for Scott County this upcoming season.

Is he close to retirement as well?

I'd say he has at least 3-4 years left. I'm not sure how many years he had in before his first GC run. He had 3 years at GC, 19 years at EJ and 1 at Scott Co. What's retirement exactly, 27 years?

27 is the norm but you have to be 55 for full benefits/pension. If I'm wrong, anyone correct the information.

With the job opening up so late, are there any names who come to mind? Or, do they hire within and go the interim route? Is there anybody currently on staff who could fill in as interim?

The job is currently posted (https://grantcounty.tedk12.com/hire/ViewJob.aspx?JobID=2793), So it looks like they are looking to hire a full time candidate.

I do know that they are currently running workouts and have a parent meeting this week under an interim head coach- one of the assistants from last season. I think that if they do not find a quality candidate they will run this year with an interim and reassess the job for next season.

For the people in the know, how possible is it to make Grant Co a winner, whether it be a short term plan or long term? If you had a coach that was willing to see it through with an administration that was on the same page?

Mike Davis probably did the best job of all the coaches at GCHS. He was there from 05-2011 I think. Since he left it has been bad hire after bad hire. I never met this guy that just left, but it sounds like he was a good one as well.

I sort of like this idea... in the hopes that the interim turns out to be a great candidate to become the head coach.

I think this is a great idea. It works out for the coaching staff now, and for anybody the school would bring in. If you bring in somebody new, it is going to be rough for them in the first year. If you go the interim route, then it makes it easier for the players considering they already know the coach and there won't be a lot of change for the most part. If the interim works out then it's a home run. If you decide at the end of the season you want to bring somebody new in, then you will have a lot of coaches to select from if it's one of the first jobs posted.

What makes you say it was “bad hire after bad hire”?

I was there. I knew them. I saw it day after day, season after season. Mike Davis was a good one, David Arvin lasted a year, Kevin Siple was alright but his history shows he was always a job hopper. Dalzell wasin over his head and then, if I recall, recommended that they pull from district play, and then split. I did not know Jacob Morris so perhaps I was being a little too strong. Everyone seems to like the guy who just left.

I remember back in 2011 there was a rumor that Rodney Heath was very interested in the job. I'm not sure if that would have altered history or not. I may be getting my year or name mixed up though. It's been a while.

Davis resigned but was basically given the option to resign or be fired. That happened after an admin change and some parents not liking how Davis’s rules. Davis did a very good job.

Arvin was promised a number of things that he was never given (Paul Rains was interested in the job at the time but the district wouldn’t give him what he wanted). Arvin was not let go as a coach but was not renewed as a teacher. No one ever really got to see what Arvin could have done.

Siple had a certification issue he was aware of but never took action on. That was the reason he did not continue to teach/coach. Under Siple they did almost beat Madison Central in the first round of the playoffs and had a game against Conner or Dixie they should have won but there was the wrong application of a penalty multiple times. The opponent was allowed to rough the kicker and the officials forced Grant to take the penalty on the kickoff.  Siple definitely had some moments.

Dalzell left due to an issue with the district. He wasn’t let go as the HC or as a teacher. Lack of support is tough to overcome.

Morris actually won district coach of the year in a district with Scott Co, Douglas, Montgomery Co and Great Crossing. The last two seasons were in part fallout from COVID and Covid 2.0. The schedule was also above their weight class due to some poor scheduling choices.

Cole it appears finally got some district backing. He is the first coach to get in school lifting and was allowed to lift before school. Both of those had never been allowed. He did a very good job scheduling to help the program. His two senior classes were forced as freshman due to numbers to play varsity football against Douglas, Scott Co, Montgomery Co and Great Crossings. The principal that hired him moved to superintendent after his first year.

So bad hire after bad hire I’m not sure is completely accurate. One common thread is administration from central office, principals and AD didn’t make anyone’s life easy or truly help the program. In many cases as bad as it might have looked from the outside some of those years those guys did some amazing jobs coaching.

Grant County Football has never had a COACHING PROBLEM.  With the information that @barrel gave, plus what I just posted...you can fill in the blanks as to other issues, but coaching isn't one of them. I'd say the program has been blessed with that side of things more than most will ever realize, but......most "don't know what they don't know".

In the district for 18 years myself.

I thought Monty Joe Lovell was their first head coach??

He was. The field or stadium was named after him a couple of years ago. After that I believe it was Crowley, the Bowlin followed by Davis.
