Last year St. X finished second in the GCL South behind Moeller, with a 9-0 win over 3rd place LaSalle, a 22-17 win over 4th place Elder, and then a 45-37 regular season loss to Moeller. They also suffered a Week 1 loss when Lakota West beat them 17-13, and a 7-3 loss to Louisville Trinity in Week 7. The Bombers got revenge for their Week 1 loss by beating Lakota West 16-13 in the 3rd round of the OH-DI playoffs, but their season came to an end the next week when Mighty Moe notched a second win over St. X, defeating the Bombers 28-23 in the state quarterfinals.

For their 2025 campaign the Bombers return Vandy commit Daniel Vollmer, who led the GCL in rushing yards last season at running back, as well as RB Jake Britt, who was 3rd in rushing yards for St. X last season behind QB Chase Herbstreit, who will be playing on Saturdays in Ann Arbor this upcoming fall. Britt was also the team's #1 receiver last year, and will be back lead the Bomber's attack by air along with Cam Taylor and Vollmer. On the defensive front, St. X also has the top returning tackler in the GCL in linebacker Kobe Clapper, who tallied 54 solo tackles and 51 assisted tackles last season, finishing 2nd in the GCL for total tackles. Defensive back Brayden Reilly will also be back for the Bombers in 2025 after clocking in with 51 solo tackles and 23 assisted tackles in his junior season. Clapper currently holds over 20 D1 offers, and Reilly has 11 D1 offers.

That's a vintage 1980s-era logo I dug up. Way back when, my cousin pitched for the Bombers baseball team and I had a t-shirt with that logo on it. I remember my uncle taking me to watch the St. X vs. Moeller game and laughing on the drive there as he told me, "Just wait until you see how this Griffey kid knocks out some absolute bombs off of your cousin." ?

St X has never been know for their offensive of production under Steve Specht, but are widely known for how good they are on defense. I'm taking Trinity if they can put up a couple TD's.

The Bomber Defense is legendary.  So many teams try to implement the 3-3-5 like X, but nobody can run it the way X does.  

The link below is the DVD where Specht outlines the basic premise of how they run the stack.  It's old, but awesome.  And if you've seen X play, you know that the info in the DVD is the extremely watered down version of what they do.  And as a bonus, Cov Cath is on the cover.  I still have this DVD somewhere in my basement along with a bunch of other DVDs/VHSs and books.  I'm a big geek over any playbook I can get my hands on.

Steve Specht, their Head Coach, may be the absolute best defensive mind around.  

 

Their 3-3 stack is legendary, often imitated, but never replicated.  Theyve been running that defense for 30 or so years.  It gives everyone fits.

Sorta makes you wonder why no Colleges have snapped him up?

With the Spread so prevalent in College Football this alignment is more mainstream now.

I love his stuff too. The way Steve uses the "adjuster" position is often copied but never duplicated. That position really makes or breaks his defense. If you ever get a chance to watch some of the film of Luke Kuechly when he played as the "adjuster", do it. Based on what you said, I think you'd love it.

Seen tape of him doing it, and saw a couple games live.

So I heard him say this at a clinic forever ago, probably 20 or more years ago.

He said they had an absolute stud of a kid.  Fast, athletic, strong as an ox.  But football didn't make any sense to him at all. He couldn't line up right to formations, didn't know how to determine the strong side vs weak side, gap assignments, coverages, etc.  No matter what they did, he wouldn't remember any of it, for whatever reason.  But they decided he had to be on the field because of how insanely good he was.  So, he created the adjuster.  Essentially, stay back at safety depth, and you have zero responsibilities.  Line up wherever, do whatever you want.... blitz, cover, move around, we don't care.  Just wreak havoc.  So he did, and it worked.  He just flew around making tackles all over the place.  And opposing coaches couldn't figure out how this kid would line up in or whatever his job was.  Opposing coaches thought it was this crazy complex thing, and they couldn't scheme around it becasue he'd be doing different things against the same formation each time.  It was brilliant.  And since then, that's been the adjuster every year.  He tweaks it some based on who it is, but that's how it started.

Just watched the replay of the Cathedral game. I think they are better than Moeller. As mentioned above, the defense is stellar.
