Paintsville 60 Elliott Co 53

Featured Replies

How so?

It was exactly the same except Russell played a good Ironton team on their home court. The game before they blew out Rowan Co.

Elliott just blew out Greenup Co, (who Rowan had just beaten), then lost a very close game to a good Paintsville team on a neutral court.

How is that much different?

I can tell you one difference. Ferguson of Elliott who is a starter and also one of their best scorer's was barely able to get up and down the floor(in th 3rd and 4th) for the pain of a sprained ankle. He didnt cut and slash like normal wasnt near as quick on "D" and if im not mistaken didnt take but two or three shots in the fourth. He told me personally that after the adrenaline wore off in 2nd quarter it was a labor in itself to just get up and down the floor. Not making excuses for the loss just making a point to fball how it was different. To the best of my knowledge all the Russell players were healthy!!! Myself I didn't think russell should fall from #1 because of the Ironton loss! Everybody loses one now and again!!! BUT i do think their is a difference in comparing the two teams losses

I don't think this bunch of kids has the make-up to pull a post tourney flop. I've watched them since the third grade and the play every game with all they have. They are usually younger and smaller than other teams put stay competitive through goood basketball sense and pure determination. I've got to agree with Millhouse on Maynard. Why he didn't get more minutes is beyond me. There were a couple of kids on the floor who looked a little lost offensively and defensively at times, especially when Paintsville made its run to the lead. Maybe he could have provided a spark, but we will never know. I don't know how it could have hurt to try it. Great game by the Paintsville players and coaches.

Whats funny is that every coach knows about Maynard and that forces someone to be right on him at all times, thus opening up the floor for Ferguson and the Faulkners. When he went into the game in the forth, around a minute to go, Bill Mike and all of his coaches where standing and pointing at him and you could see the players from Paintsville telling each other not to let him shoot.

:thumb: Good post, I agree on all points that you made. How is Ferguson by the way? I hope that someone will post any updates. Thanks.

Johnathan played very well and I am proud of him He just needed a little more help and the Lions would have won. Get healthy soon

You can't beat a good team when you miss free thorws down the stretch. Elliott was 0-4 in the last 4 minutes if I recall correctly and that was the difference. Also Ferguson was playing on a bad ankle and did favor it some. I dont think it was that he need more help, just that the TEAM needs help sometimes with thier free throws. I say sometimes because Elliott County just came off a 23-25 perfromance from the line aganist Greenup County and is shooting over 65% from the line as a team.

But the Maynard kid was #1 in the region last year on free throws and 2nd in 3 point shots and he has not got the playing time this Why? Do the coaches like to say we start 5 sophmores? So eeekc what say you now?

I tell you what I say! Maynard was given some time and like everyone else on the team he wasn't on!! He was 1-2 from layup land and 0-3 from beyond the arc. I'm sure if he had busted a couple of those trey's he would have gotten more playing time. I don't know about last year but according to the Daily Independent friday morning Maynard is shooting 63% from the stripe. Being able to shoot isn't everything. When Maynard is on he is hard to clean after but thursday night "NOBODY" from Elliott was on! As a team Elliott shot 35% from the field and a dismal 28% from the stripe.

I agree, however, when Paintsville went to the zone and Elliott lost the mo that would have been a good time to get some good looks.

Actually Russell was not completely healthy when they played Ironton. Blair had the flu. He played but did not start. Thats not an excuse but it is similar to Elliotts situation.

Like I said.

Blow out win followed by a tough loss to a good team. Each team had one of their top players at less than 100% in the loss.

What does last year have to do with this year Ms. Liberty? It seems like everytime there is an Elliott County thread on this site, it turns in to a Tyler Maynard thread. He is a big key to Elliott County's success so far this season but everyone acts like he is just sitting on the bench watching. Granted he didnt have his best shooting game aganist Paintsville and probabley didnt get all the minutes that he wanted and maybe deserved, but without him Elliott County maybe wouldnt have gotten to the Class "A" state tournament and probabley would be 14-5 right now. By the sound of what I have read so far this season, Maynard has an unreal amount of pressure on him to perform at a high level. He is going to have bad games just like everyone eles of Elliott County's team does, and just like everybody eles that plays basketball. Sometimes he, also like everyone eles that plays basketball, isnt going to get the minutes that they think they should, and like I said earlier that they might deserve, but what goes through Coach Mays' mind only he knows and what he is doing is what he thinks is going to put the team in the best postition. Is that always the right desicion? No, of course not. But I promise he isnt try to lose games, and he isnt trying to upset his players. This was a good game for Elliott County IMO and I think they can learn from this loss. They have the most important part of the season still in front of them. Stick together guys, you are playing great basketball and you have as good as shot as anyone to get to the state tournament. :thumb:

Start and play who is doing the best at the present time regardless of what grade they're in.

I know who that is!

My previous post is not a pro Maynard post it just so happens to be him who would have been the logical & simple choice to help spark the O int Q4. If there were another kid on the bench who could accomplish the same thing put him in. It would not matter to me its just the coach has to see these things & make the moves. The one kid was not even being guarded & he would not shoot! He can hit that shot! How do coaches not see these things? Elliott only scored 4 pts in something like 6 minutes or so in the 4th & seemed like the coaches could have made a move to at least try something. I do not care if is the middle that was wide open & the only man that can score in there would be the 10th man off the bench. Put him in & see what you can get, maybe just a little spark or something since nothing else was happening on the offensive end. Maybe switch Offense for Defense & visa-versa as I mentioned once before. Its just frustrating to lose a game like this that you should have won. The coaches made the lineup change during early Jan. practice sessions & it worked. They also have to do the same during the course of the games that is my point. It just seems a better coaching job in Q4 & some made Ft's may have produced a different outcome. Almost looks as if P'vlle knew Elliotts persnel better than Elliott if I can be a little sarcastic. I am not a coach but I am entitled to my opinion and there you have it. Here is saying good luck to Elliott the rest of the way and if I know these kids they have put this loss behind them & will continue to work hard from here on in order to get to Rupp.
