What are the best lifts for football?

Featured Replies

The most important lift is the one up of the couch and get that kid into the weight room listen to the coaches, and eat and hydrate correctly.

I would have to agree, just getting them in the weightroom on a consistent basis could be the toughest part.

Personally I like cleans, it builds your hips and just the motion works on explosion at the hips and legs which transfers to tackling or running on the football field.

Cleans or the Ground Based Jammer.

Jammer? what's it like?

Hammer Strength makes an excellent machine. Basically it looks like an angled shoulder press machine w/no seat. There are two handle grips on either side. To do it you have to angle your torso to the floor, drop your hips, and squat down. From there you fire off at about a 45 degree angle, like exploding through a tackle. You extend your arms over your head while you fire out and finish near full extension. The only problem is that you have to have the actual machine to do it, and most schools and gyms don't have them.

This is simular to the clean and jerk, which is better because one has to balance and control the weight. And anyone can do it all it takes is a bar and weights. Proper Tech.

Curls...

Curls for the girls baby !!!!!

nah... Bench, Squat and clean. Clean is a tough lift for kids to get right. Form is important in all of these but Clean is not easy.

just "lift" your butt off the couch and away from the video games and start running! Speed is the X factor!!!

Power clean in my opinion is the best and toughest lift to do. But I have heard from many college coaches that leg strength is the biggest downfall among high school players if and when they reach college. So things like leg press and squats are important too if done correctly.

Agreed!

In a football game, how many times is a lineman pressing away from his body with his back against a support system? Never. The ONLY thing a bench press is good for is confidence. "How much you bench?" is the most popular question in any weightroom, and the better your answer, the more impressive it sounds.

I could argue the same thing for squats. How often do you put a guy on your shoulders and lift him up and down in a "slow" motion.

Dont get me wrong, strength is VERY important, but if a guy concentrated on cleans and explosive power lifts, he will be ready when fall comes along.

Weight lifting is not meant to mimic football. Weight lifting is used to strengthen excessory muscles, used in football. The chest and legs are the two biggest muscles groups used in football. Players do not perform a perfect bench press during a game, but pass blocking and sometimes run blocking is closely related to a bench press, and uses the same muscle group. Players do not squat or dead lift another player in games either, but a good stance and the tackling motion is closely related to the squat motion and uses the same muscle groups. If these three major lifts were not important then every college and NFL team would not spend so much time working on them. These three lifts are by no means the only workout that a player should be doing, but they are the base why which all other workouts are built around.

Bench - to strengthen the chest, shoulders, triceps

Squat - to strengthen the front of the legs and back

Dead lift - the strengthen the back of the legs and back

Clean - for explosion, and coordination

Now that I'm no longer a competive athlete, its all for the girls, curls and stuff that make the chest shoulders and guns impressive :D

no jogging, only sprits.

My son has lifted for high school football since eigth grade and he said what lift helped him alot of Butterflies. He did them everyday and the thing he said that it helped the most was tackling. Not one person broke one of his tackles, it helps you when you wrap up.

1. CLEANS 2. SQUAT #. If you have a ground based jammer that is great.

I'm sorry; butterflies isn’t a very good lift for football. I would have to say squat, all core exercises, bench and exercises that build fast twitch muscle fibers (speed squat, speed bench, band squat, band bench, chain squat, chain bench, etc.). I agree with whoever said that you can't mimic football in the weight room, so what do you do? You get as fast and as strong as you can doing your major lifts (bench, squat, deadlift, etc.). Just my 2 cents.
