Final.

Ludlow comes to Alexandria and defeat the homestanding Brossart Mustangs 46-35 in the game which will position the Panthers to repeat as Class A, District 4 champions.

The Panthers came to play, delivering an early game "punch in the mouth" to the home team, opening up a quick 14-0 lead.  The two teams traded punches for the remainder of the half which ended with the score knotted at 28s.  The third quarter belonged to Ludlow, as they scored on three occasions, opening up an insurmountable 46-28 lead.  Brossart scored a late-game touchdown, which was too little, too late, conceding the victory to Woody McMillan's Ludlow Panthers who had a happy ride back to the River CIty.

Brossart Touchdowns  -  Cam Mandel (3), Nick Cozzi, and Landon Geyer

Ludlow Touchdowns  -  Austin Smith-Baxley (2), Dameyn Anness (2), Carson Evans (2) and Gabe Payne 

The two teams round out district seeding play next Friday night when Ludlow takes on Holy Cross at TMU,  and Brossart hosts Trimble County.

Sounds like a very exciting game. Ludlow now should win the district for the second year in a row, and could have a similar playoff path as last year. Where they meet Newport in the second round, and could avenge a regular season loss to them like they did last year. Obviously need to win next week first, but The big game for Ludlow will be Paris in two weeks. If they win that, they should jump NCC in the RPI rankings and give Ludlow most likely KCD again in the regional finals like last year. 

A perfect reason why the RPI system is broken.  Strength of schedule doesn’t seem to factor in unless it’s a win.  Some of the teams in the top RPI in 1A play a very easy schedule to boost them but not prepare them for playoffs.  I have not seen Ludlow play but judging by their schedule would not think they would beat many of the true top teams in 1A.

I’m a little confused by this post. When you say true top teams. Are you saying like the true top 5 teams or top 10 teams?  Also which teams would you consider the top teams? Obviously Pikeville, Campbellsville, Raceland, Sayre. NCC would be the next ones behind them. However, who else if anyone would you say they wouldn’t have a shot against? I think they definitely have a chance against teams like KCD, Bethlehem, etc. 

Not that it matters any but last week in 1A BGP had Ludlow ranked 13th and the TP94 Power Ratings had Ludlow 13th.

Probably poor choice of words.  I was just trying to show that the RPI system does not actually give a true ranking.  For example, Pikeville is 15 in RPI but everyone has ranked them #1 all year.  The BGP rankings this week are probably accurate with the top 5 but compare the ranking to RPI and it is very different.  I would agree looking at schedules and point differential etc. Ludlow has a legit shot at beating KCD.  The only knowledge I have on teams outside of NKY though is purely looking at scores and common opponents.  I think there is a large drop off after the top 4 or 5 teams in 1A.  It will be hard for anyone not in the top 4 or 5 to beat a team in the top.  However, that is why we play the game.  Any given night upsets can happen!

The current RPI and the final RPI will change quite a bit over the next 2 weeks. KCD has at least 1 very likely, and possibly 2 losses left on the schedule with a decent Henry Co team. Bethlehem has 2 possible losses left on the schedule. Raceland has 1 loss left on the schedule. Newport should finish with 2 wins against teams with very low winning percentages. Campbellsville finishes with the best team on their schedule, undefeated Hart County. Hazard and Pikeville this week will likely drop Hazard out of the top 10 RPI. NCC finishes with decent winning percentage Bellevue and a winning percentage booster in 4A Holmes despite the Holmes winning percentage being 0. Ludlow finishes with a low WP Holy Cross and it doesn't look like Paris is quite the RPI boost they were when Brossart beat them. Brossart should win out but will face NCC in the 2nd round of the playoffs after losing to Ludlow. Sayre will win out and host through the playoffs, but Bracken County is the best team they will have played during the regular season. Pikeville should win out and beating Boyd will give them a winning percentage bump.

The RPI is a terrible system to create matchups because there is no reward for playing a tough schedule unless you win. Every 1A team in the state would be 1 and 6 if they played Pikeville's schedule with the exception of maybe Campbellsville, Raceland and NCC. Every 1A team in the state with the exception of maybe Campbellsville, Raceland and Pikeville would have 4 losses if they played NCC's  schedule. Every team 1A team in the state would have with the exception of maybe Campbellsville, Pikeville and NCC would finish with at least 5 losses if they played Raceland's schedule. There is a high probability that Campbellsville, Pikeville, Raceland, and NCC would be undefeated if they played the schedule of every 1A team in the state with the exception of Corbin on Hazard's schedule. 

Ashland Paul Blazer, Lexington Christian, Belfry, Ironton, Johnson Central, Corbin, GRC, Campbell County, Highlands, Conner and Lloyd would be running clock favorites against every 1A team in the state outside of Pikeville, Raceland, Campbellsville, NCC and possibly Sayre. The best teams will rise to the regional round, but matchups will determine if the actual best 4 teams play in the Semifinals. There is a round 3 scenario where we see Pikeville vs. Raceland and Campbellsville vs. NCC. If that is the case, the winner of those games will be huge favorites and likely running clock the team they play in round 4.

It looks like Ludlow focused on running the ball more and getting prepared for cold weather and playoff football. Throwing as needed. Good win Ludlow.

I agree with what you are saying. Which I know we all have said it, something like Calpreps would be a much better system to use than RPI.

That’s exactly what Ludlow is, a physical running team. When they do pass it’s all set up from what they do in the run game. When you play Ludlow you have to be ready for 4 quarters of hard nose physical football, as they try to out physical teams and do a good job with it. However, when they do pass they have some guys with good speed that can beat you deep too. They are a very solid team.

Exactly what they should be doing. They need to keep the passing game between 1-7 throws a game if the running game is on. If they are throwing it more than atleast 9 times then they are most likely going to be in trouble especially against better competition.

They have a really good freshman QB that can really throw it. However, I don’t think he played due to injury. I do think though they showed now that is is district and playoff time. They are going to do what they do and that is run it and make you stop it for 4 quarters.
