Virginia's Tony Bennett retiring

Featured Replies

Kids are tired of running a boring offense and making 10 passes and eating up the shot clock for this coach, he has had success with this type play but the AAU driven athletes of today have absolutely no interest.

They may be true, but the timing is incredibly odd which is why it about has to be something else.

Coaches don't retire within weeks of the season starting, for that reason. Something else is causing this.

"Former Virginia men's basketball coach Tony Bennett, who officially announced his retirement Friday morning, pointed to the "current environment" in college sports as one of the driving forces behind his abrupt decision to step down with the Cavaliers.

"The hardest thing to say is when I looked at myself and I realized I'm no longer the best coach to lead this program in this current environment," Bennett said at his retirement news conference. "If you're going to do it, you gotta be all-in. If you do it halfhearted, it's not fair to the university and those young men. So in looking at it, that's what made me step down.""

Sounds like another "old school" coach that doesn't want to put up with transfer portal lunacy and NIL Drama.

Agreed, but didn’t the guy sign a new contract just a few months ago?  Did he think things would change?

Cliff Ellis at Coastal Carolina left four games in last year. Said he couldn't handle NIL and the portal any longer. He had over 900 wins.

That's what I am wondering.  I don't think we have been given a full explanation.

Add Jim Larranaga to the list of coaches stepping away, this one coming in the middle of the Miami season. He cited the college basketball system (i.e. transfer portal and NIL) for the reason he’s so exhausted.

I love the hypocrisy of these guys. Griping about players leaving programs and then they leave their players high and dry. And I assure you they’re pulling down a hell of a lot more money than the kids. So brave.
