Belfry starts the year 1-2 with a win over Breathitt County followed by a loss to George Rogers Clark in which they were up two touchdowns in the 3rd quarter before they would be stopped at the end of the game after a GRC comeback and GRC would win 43-35. This week they lost a 48-41 thriller against Johnson Central in which both teams had a great offensive showing, but defensively struggled. This week the problem Belfry had was wrap up tackling and I anticipate that this will be a major focus for them this coming week. However, the passing game was outstanding, going for over 300 yards.

Southwestern, who made the regional final in 5A last season, starts the year 0-2 with a 14-0 loss to North Hardin and a 38-6 loss to South Warren. The offense struggled against South Warren and the defense gave up 29 points in the second quarter after the first quarter was a back and forth battle. This will be an opportunity for Southwestern to make some adjustments in how they come out against Belfry. It will be interesting to see how they defend Belfry’s passing attack.

Must win?

Both teams come into this game looking for a pickmeup after two straight losses. While the Pirates are likely looking at another district title, the Warriors are winless and staring down a schedule that is relentless. Both teams need this game to get some momentum rolling. Is it too early to call this game a must-win?

Who prevails?

Last season, Southwestern won this game by 7 at Belfry. Can they do the same here?

It seems that prognosticators still like the Pirates in 3A, is the jury still out on the Warriors or have most fans already checked out?

Southwestern has only scored 6 total points in 2 games against good competition.  Meanwhile Belfry has given up at least 26 in every game.  I think the Pirates struggles on defense should be what the Warriors need to get their offense going.  But I think they fall a little bit short, Belfry 28-14.

While Belfry's offense has made some positive changes from last season, the offensive output has been impressive. The run game is as good as usual, but what is definitely eye catching is the passing game, which is virtually unheard of. This young QB (Chase Varney) is a player! Look for the Pirates to come away with the win.

Varney threw for 376 yards last week. That's a whole season for most Belfry quarterbacks. The bread and butter is still there, but this new development makes the Pirates lethal, offensively.

It certainly feels like a must-win for Southwestern from a confidence standpoint. With what's still in front of them, there will be other opportunities to turn things around, but a loss here - especially a bad one - could send them spiraling.

Hopefully the home turf at the 'Reservation' inspires the Warriors to live up to their moniker.

The vibe this matchup gives me says shootout, despite Southwestern's offensive woes. I just have a feeling we're going to see some fireworks from both sides. Dumphord could be in for a big night. I think the Warriors need that from him if they're going to get that first win.
