Weather Forecast and 100+ Heat Index for Friday (8/30)

Featured Replies

Everyone should get ready for some high temperatures if they want to be out and about on Friday afternoon or night. West of the I-75 corridor, the preliminary prediction calls for probable triple-digit temperatures. In western Kentucky, the heat index can be as high as 105. The possibility of precipitation arriving in western Kentucky on Friday evening is a plus.

  • This is going to make hydration an issue next week, especially for any teams/players that had an issue this week. Hydration is an all the time thing, not just drinking water the day of.

  • If you want to experience dry heat, travel to Las Vegas during the summer. My wife and I went in late May. It was quite the experience.

  • We need the rain, bad.

Sunday morning update

In parts of western Kentucky, actual air temperatures as of this morning might be as high as 105. They might hit the high nineties near I-75. Along the I-75 corridor, the heat index may rise above 100. A 105 heat index could be experienced by most of west Kentucky. There is a chance for some precipitation, but it is hard to predict with certainty how much or where it will fall this far out.

Everyone needs to make appropriate plans if they are going to be outside this week, not just athletes. This following week will bring with it the warmest temperatures of the summer. I'm posting more about it in our weather forum.

Here is that thread everyone and @nWo is always updating Kentucky weather and big national events in our Weather Forum.

It was like this last year for the same weekend! Super hot temps, high humidity during the day, then Friday night had crazy storms!

It's gonna be interesting.

On Friday afternoon, expect afternoon temperatures to be in the upper 90s to low 100s. It is predicted that the heat index will be close to 100. As a cold front moves toward Kentucky on Friday night, dew points will rise, and showers and thunderstorms may occur.

Was thinking the same thing. I could see some games preemptively moving to Saturday as the week goes along.

I would think so too but unlike several years ago when the Heat Index was talked about a lot it seems to be almost forgotten the last couple of years.

KHSAA has gone to a wet bulb reading.  It is much more forgiving than the old heat index.

Thanks for that, I knew something had changed because no matter how hot it gets the heat index never seems to be a concern any longer... which is a concern.

Here is a good link on the Heat Index vs. Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT).

Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) is similar to the Heat Index in that it is an indicator of the stress on the body from the heat. While it is not as well-known as the Heat Index, it’s not a new term. WBGT was developed in the 1950s after heat related illnesses affected the US armed services during the 1940s. After its implementation, there was a reduction in heat related illnesses during basic training. One fundamental difference between the Heat Index and WBGT is that the latter is calculated with the temperature measured in the sun. While Heat Index only takes temperature and Relative Humidity into account, WBGT takes several variables into account. These variables include:

Temperature
Humidity
Wind Speed
Sun Angle
Cloud Cover
Physical Activity

@nWo do you have any thoughts or additional data you can share on the difference between these two measurements?
