Again, there has to be more to this than he wanted to save on commute.  Maybe there's a disagreement with admin, athletic budget cuts, a health issue, something.

If not, why would any school trust that he wouldn't leave them high and dry again?  

I respect your opinion though I disagree and I support your right to share it but I think you're overreacting just a bit. It's a little cynical to assume ill intent on the part of another person and then share an uncorroborated opinion when you don't really know the whole story. I know a lot of this story, trust me. I mean, can other coaches now critique your career choices since this is apparently fair game? No, that wouldn't be fair. They would be on the outside looking in and wouldn't know the whole story. Maybe this, maybe that you say. Maybe give more facts to support your notion instead of merely conjecturing at the expense of a good family and little kids who look up to their dad. I think that's a little more fair to coach Barth, who's pretty much beyond reproach IMO.

It's apparent you've never coached. Teaching jobs sometimes open at the end of the school year and opportunities become available. I really don't think he cares what guys like you think. He cares what his wife and kids think. Hang his team out to dry? He did everything the right way, worked hard, and was successful. Folks like you are why ladies and men walk away in coaching. It's HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS. Pretty cheap shot about "save a few bucks in gas". It's about TIME. Fort Thomas to Walton, then to Verona, then home. He's given the Bearcats all they asked. I'm not insinuating anything nefarious behind the move, but there is definitely more to it than that.  I have a really, really hard time believing any head coach would make this decision so late on their own unless offered a college job.

That's because you have no idea about his commute, his teaching schedule, travel to the facility, and his wishes. He's a high school football coach.....You make it bigger than life. Basically you have no idea of everything involved with being a teacher and head coach. Walton will continue to play and the new coach can be ready to roll by the end of the dead period.

Ok, I have coached high school for quite some time on both sides of the river.  I also taught for over 15 years.  I know the time commitments.  I'm very aware of the unrealistic and growing expectations people have of high school sports coaches. I definitely don't make it out to be bigger than life. I also am very aware of the unrealistic and growing expectations on teachers. Those people that do and missing my kids games on weekends is why I stopped.  

I also know when jobs become available, and many jobs have been available for a long time at every district.  If you were thinking of leaving at any point, you should have resigned football duties months ago.

I think everyone on here would feel differently if their son was at WV and suddenly there's a coaching search that'll likely go into June.  There's not many candidates out there.

Again, I don't have any ill will towards anyone.  But to justify this poor timing is silly.  I don't blame anyone for bettering themselves financially or for more time with family.  The timing is garbage, plain and simple to say otherwise is being disingenuous.

Yes, the timing isn't great. But we also don't know what other personal factors may have played into this situation beyond the commute. What if there's a family reason that wasn't there in November that is there now? Someone could be sick, or maybe his wife got a promotion or any other multitude of things that could have happened between the end of the season and now. I just had to give up a high school coaching gig a few  months before the season started because of a work opportunity that suddenly became available, and wouldn't have been available had I waited until the end of the season. And yes the timing sucked, but it was the best decision for me and my family. Which when it's all said and done, that's who you have to answer to at the end of the day and who is most important in your life..... your family.

Everyone, this has been a good discussion and everyone has made some good points but we really need to get back to the open job at Walton-Verona.

To see this doubling and tripling down from the outside in at the expense of a man's family's reputation just doesn't seem reasonable nor open-minded to all the possibilities in what we all have to agree is a crazy unpredictable life here on Earth. I'm just wondering what kind of coach and teacher would proffer such a flawed and unsubstantiated claim and then keep hammering it. That said, I think I know who the next coach is going to be. Sorry, Guru. Can't name him now.

What was unreasonable about what I've said?  Football isn't worth the pennies per hour sacrifice for family. 

What's unreasonable is to string along a school and a group of young men for 6 months when your heart isn't in it, clearly his wasn't....and that is perfectly fine. It's an extra curricular activity that most people take way too seriously. 

And most coaches of his caliber will still spend a crazy amount of hours as an assistant coach because that's what they do.  They can't turn it off.  

I'm sure all the supporters would have a different opinion if this was your son's team or if you were the principal or AD of the school.

That's all I've said, that there has to be other circumstances besides a commute.

Great opportunity for Coach Pence and the Walton community.  Coach Pence is young and hungry and also has some great experience under Randy Borchers on running a program.  Best of luck to Coach Pence and the Bearcats.
