BBN’s frustrations by the numbers

Completely agree.

It's much easier to win with a starting five full of seniors than it is with freshman, regardless of how many stars they had coming out of high school. Cal doesn't get enough credit for that.

And that is why Pope will beat those numbers. Five stud freshmen will not win postseason games in this NIL/transfer portal era. Multiple teams are building experienced all star rosters today. Cal wasn't. He was still relying too much on freshmen.

Time will tell....What I can tell you is there is a new found energy level that I haven't felt in 10 years around the program.  But like everything in Sports, you have to win.....  I think Pope knows

I understand that Cal "under achieved" the last handful of years, but I just think that the people that pushed him out are going to look silly when Pope is no better, if not worse.  Pope is not g

And the point that I’m making is you can’t pretend to be happy about an unproven coach with zero post season success while having complained about a guy who won more at UK, regular and post season, th

That's a pretty bold assumption.

How has Pope constructed his rosters in the past? Why hasn't he had any post season success to this point?

Based on what? His post-season success to date?

Excellent performance stats posted by his teams and assuming he is getting better talent at UK.

Not enough talent. I think with better talent at UK, he will deliver.

And the bar set by Cal over the past 6 years is not that difficult to exceed.

For what it's worth, Pope won 68% of his regular season games and was 7-8 in post season games at BYU.

This goes without saying, but we obviously agree that won't get it done at UK.

But it is close to being better than Cal over the past 6 seasons, and that is the question at hand in this discussion.

Close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades.

Saying Pope will have more post season success than Cal is based on nothing other than hopes and dreams.

Continuing to say 40% postseason winning % over the last 6 post seasons is very misleading. One of those post season's didn't even happen because it was cancelled. Which that was the year UK won the SEC by a record 4 games. The year before covid cancelled the post season, UK made the elite 8 and lost in OT. At the end of the day Calipari was very successful in terms of tournament play up until Covid. The last 4 seasons were bad though, so no argument there.

Maybe you missed my comment that the analysis had to go back 6 years to include the last time Ky made more than a token post-season appearance.  Perhaps you prefer I went back only 4 years to where the post-season record would have been 2 wins and 7 losses for 22.2%.  It took the regional finals loss of 2019 season to up that percentage to 40% you claim is unfair.  If anything all the trends simply wore BBN down with continued annual optimism generated by great incoming prospects to annually going home early.  Simply we haven’t lived up to the polls, the expert opinions, NCAA seeding, nor Cal’s hype.

We are only talking about the past 3-6 years.

I agree a tall order to expect anyone to equal what Cal accomplished in his entire tenure at UK.

I'm talking about the most recent years.

Nothing in Pope's past would indicate he would perform better in the post season than Cal did the last six years.

If we include conference tournaments, Pope has performed better. But you are right about the NCAA tournament.

I guess Coaching success is only going to happen when you have prior Coaching success, says TheDeuce.

Take a peak at what Coach K looked like when Duke hired him in 1980. I’m done with the “what did Pope do prior to being hired”. Let’s move on, and let the proof be in the future not forecasted by the past.

Go Big Blue!!

So now Pope is Coach K. Got it.

You know that's not what he's saying. I'm not even going to explain it, because you know the point he's making. ?

Valid and well made points.  But a 33.3% postseason winning rate over last 3 seasons and a 40% postseason winning % over last six pretty clearly evidences something needed to change.  Cal clearly admitted he wasn’t going to change how he did things.

I read yours just fine, but maybe you missed my comment saying how you using the last “6 post seasons” in your argument is misleading. Considering one of those years the post season was cancelled and not even played. I know you narrative you are trying to tell. However, was just saying your numbers is over the last 5 post seasons, not 6.

Which I even acknowledge the last 4 years was bad. So calculating the last 4 years is going to bring down the numbers for any other years you like to add with it. Just like the first 4 years overall would bring numbers way up. The best bet would be to take his first 4 years, and his last 4 years cancel them out. Then just look at the years in between. Which has a nice little mix. The 38 and 1 final four season, then a second round exit, an elite 8 loss on a last second shot to the National champs, then a sweet 16 loss, and another elite 8 loss in OT. Which then takes us up to the Covid post season cancellation year.
