15th Region "Super Regional Tournament"

Recommended Posts

Speaking as someone who is interested and likes to learn things, this would have been a good time for the KHSAA to shoot out a press release describing what this is and why it is being played this way. I know it was mentioned at the Board of Control meeting but it wasn't on the press release (linked below). It kind of feels like this is being slid in as a trial run without making it a big deal. That's fine, but it also doesn't seem fair that four teams lost in the first round of their district tournaments earlier this week and still get to keep playing while a whole lot of other first round losers have already put the uniforms away.

While I am more aligned with the 9th region, my brother is heavily involved with the 15th. He explained it to me yesterday how the “play in” would take place. It took pen and paper for me to follow🤯🤯🤯. My understanding is two of the four districts only have three participating teams, which led to the “super regional” idea. Two lucky loser teams advance by way of a blind draw to a quarterfinal format. The four remaining teams are drawn into the quarter with the two district championship game losers filling in the final two spots.
The four winners of the quarter final bracket will be the district losers for the regional draw. Once again ….🤯🤯🤯🤯

This format could produce three teams from the same district in the regional tournament. Same district teams COULD meet in the semis, and then in the finals.

Not a fan. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

It is broken, badly.  The 15th region only has 14 total teams playing in postseason.  For reference, the 8th region, which is not an urban region by any stretch has 18 this year and 19 next.  Time for KHSAA to get something right and at the very least commit to each region having at the minimum of 16 total teams.

I think that's coming. There's been a lot of chatter about it from higher-ups in the last couple months. I suspect it will happen within the next two years.

I agree with that. They do not need to switch the postseason tournament though is all I'm saying.

The region tournament format has been great since 1932 and there is no reason to change it. The postseason will never be “fair” to every team.  Some districts are just better than others and the eight best teams won't make the region tournament.  This happens in every level in every sport.
