I think him starting was smart, more of a guard oriented team they were going against. And he’s arguably there best on ball defender, brings a lot more to the table on that side of things than Gaiser does. Feel bad for Gaiser because this is a very young team. Only 4 seniors, and he is gonna be stuck behind Athens and Cash pretty much his whole career. Might play beside those guys but they will be the go to guys. Bradshaw, Cash, McGillis, Wermuth, Gaiser all sophomores. Then Ruthsatz and Stewart are juniors both in the rotation. So majority of the team playing is young, and also can’t forget young Hussey who is a player and only a freshman.

Yes in Stewart’s. Stewart only got about a minute of playing time.

He was actually one of the few that played well against Great Crossing.  He has greatly improved and will really help this team.

Ruthsatz showed he can help this team.  He can hit the open shot, plays fundamental defense, boxes out and hustles for loose balls.  He may not be as talented as his brothers but has the Ruthsatz dog in him.  Plus, he claps in the kids faces who talk all game and gives it right back.  I am a fan.

I can say...last Saturday night when the Jack Kaelin Euchre Tournament the alumni department held in the Drees Center was wrapping up, there were basketball players from the football team practicing in the gym following the conclusion of the NDA around 9:30pm. Cash Harney was one of them. Dylan Gaiser was not. One of the Boosters commented that "those football guys have been coming in and putting in late hours like that." I couldn't say whether or not he was referring to those specific players present then, or referring to all of the football guys on the whole, but that may well have had some to do with the impact of "the football excuse" and which of the football guys are seeing more playing time in the early part of the hoops season now that football has concluded.

And as for whether or not Nolan Ruthsatz is one of the top 5 players/starters on the team, well, Ruthsatz was fourth in scoring for Cov Cath on Saturday night against Newport. Caden Miller & Brady Hussey both had 15, Athens McGillis had 14, Nolan Ruthsatz had 11, and Cash Harney had 10. Ruthsatz was also 3 for 4 beyond the arc, he led the team in rebounds with 6, and he only turned over 1 time. Those are pretty great stats for Nolan considering the caliber of players he was contending with among the Cov Cath starters and considering the caliber of opponent he had when playing against Newport at Newport.

Obviously it's all academic to conjecture how Dylan Gaiser would have done in Nolan's place, but it's hard to question whether or not Nolan deserved to start when he put up those stats facing a team as good as Newport is.

Regardless, I feel pretty confident we're gonna see plenty of Gaiser on the hardwood as the season progresses.

Gaiser is a great ball player. This shouldn’t even be a conversation, Ruthsatz brings more to the table right now. Better defender and better shooter, they don’t need somebody else to dominate the ball. Nolan is a perfect role guy, Gaiser role most likely is gonna be limited playing time in big games might take a little bit of ball handling duty to give those guys a break. But will play a lot and have the ball quite some in blowouts. He just is a different player than the other 3 right now! I think he actually does some things better than Nolan but it’s not those specific things CCH needs right now. This is what makes this team special, very deep and unselfish team. Can be a different leading scorer any given night, can’t key in on 1-2 guys!

I absolutely agree with you...100%. And for what it's worth, my statement wasn't intended to imply anything about Gaiser's abilities in the very least. He's a hell of an athlete on essentially any court/field he steps onto.

No doubt about that, and I didn’t take it like that. He’s just in a situation where they have a lot of talent around the same age. Really we are all blessed because there is a ton of talent in the region that is younger!!

Young Blake Hussey is the one I'm excited to watch develop over the next few years.  I think he'll be a force!

Spot on. Watched every Frosh game on the CAN. 3-4 guys in rotation are notable in each. Hussey makes that list, imo, in every game so far - tremendously consistent shooter inside and out, and is a tough defender.  

This Newport - CCH rivalry should be a good one for the next few years.

Let's give the coaching staff the benefit of the doubt Saturday night on the starting lineup, every game's starting lineup could be different due to how the players matchup to the opposing team or how a certain player performed in practice. Scouting reports sometimes dictate who best qualifies to match up defensively, speed wise, physically and size. We definitely have the talent and will definitely get better!
