January 21, 200719 yr CNNSI broke the story. First ESPN went on record saying it is not confirmed, now they are confirming it. Pittsburgh post gazette has not posted anything yet. If this is true, which it looks like it may be, what an upset....:eek:

January 21, 200719 yr I'm not sure if it is just me, but I am extremely shocked in this decision. Not that Tomlin isn't a vaible canidate, but it just seems like this hire came from way out in left field. I thought they would have went in house all the way, but again you never know in pro sports.

I thought if Grimm didn't get Rivera with Chicago would. Tomlin runs a completely different defensive scheme and the Steelers were pretty adamant about keeping Dick Labeu and his Zone Blitz scheme. As of this morning the Post-Gazette has the following statement from the Steelers: Amid conflicting reports that the Steelers have chosen either Mike Tomlin or Russ Grimm as their next head coach, team spokesman Dave Lockett issued a statement this morning that cleared up little. "At this point and time, the Steelers have not concluded a contract agreement with a new head coach, nor do we expect to do so today. There will be no other announcements from this office today." I find it hard to believe that MSNBC, SI, and ESPN were all completely wrong. There must be some validity to the story. If Mort from ESPN is standing behind it then he is probably right and Tomlin is in. He and Peter Gammons are like Oracles of prophecy at ESPN and don't get a lot wrong. Can't the same for the rest of the guys there though!

I hope he keeps the staff intact, I read all of the Viking coaches are still under contract. I believe they have some really great coaches already, but I see Grimm leaving. I hope he does not change them to that tampa 4-3 defense, which is in cover 2 90% of the time. That would limit Troy Polamalu's plays at the line of scrimage. I like the 3-4 zone blitz. I fear change... :scared: No dought. That is why I will not bad mouth their decision, I just thought Grimm would be it. They need a pass rusher the most, so those DB's don't have to cover for 5 minutes.

Tomlin is expected to make around $2.5 million per year, the going rate of late for first-time NFL coaching hires. Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher resigned Jan. 5 following 15 seasons after apparently rejecting a $6 million per year contract extension offer earlier this year. Tomlin will be the fourth consecutive coach hired by the Steelers who was a defensive assistant coach in his 30s with another team before going to Pittsburgh. Bill Austin was 37 when he was chosen in 1966, as was Chuck Noll in 1969. Cowher was 34 when he picked in 1992. Both Noll (4-0 in Super Bowls) and Cowher (1-1 in Super Bowls) took teams to multiple title games. Dan Rooney either made the choice or was involved in hiring all four coaches. Also uncertain is whether Grimm, the assistant head coach for three seasons and the offensive line coach for six seasons, will stay and work for the coach who beat him out for the job. Grimm is under contract for next season. Tomlin would become the first black coach in the Steelers' 74-season history. On Sunday, Bears coach Lovie Smith became the first black coach to take his team to the Super Bowl and, a few hours later, Tomlin mentor Tony Dungy of Indianapolis became the second. January 22, 200719 yr ESPN radio is saying that the decison has already been made but the NFL put the smackdown on a press release. Supposedly, the NFL don't want any news coming out on playoff weekends that would interfere with the games. The Steelers then said no release would come until at least Monday...
