New Rules and Points of emphasis this season?

Featured Replies

I was at my nephews scrimmage over the holidays and saw a few things that I thought were not correct (I don’t have a clue on rules anyway), but in there are always rules changes and Points of emphasis every year. What are they for the upcoming season so people in the stands can at least know about and not yell incessantly?

I know there are new foul rules. Not sure about anything else.

1. All bonus fouls are now 2 shots.

2. Bonus starts on the 5th foul of each quarter.

3. Fouls will reset at the beginning of each quarter.

Only other change I’m aware of is throw-in spots, and I doubt this is noticeable to casual fans.

My understanding is as follows:

On a foul or violation in the backcourt, ball goes to the spot closest to the interruption. In the front court, there are four spots(two on each side of the court) along the baseline and sideline for inbounding following a foul. A ball deflected out of bounds by the defense will still go to the spot the ball went out.

Not entirely certain what that means for a ball dribbled off the defender’s foot though.

Would go to the spot. And a timeout in the frontcourt will move the ball to one of those 4 spots except a timeout after an out of bounds. In that instance the ball still goes to the spot it went out of bounds.

I know college changed the charge rule so that there shouldn't be as many charges as in the past.  Are they doing the same in High school?

There has been no change to the charge/blocking fouls in high school.

Yes, there will no longer be 1 n 1's.  I wonder if the changes will result in teams being more aggressive on the defensive end.  Every quarter will start with 0 team fouls.

12th region refs will be glad to know this.  Nothing they love more than winding up and taking 2-3 over exaggerated steps into a charge call 15 times a game.

Reading through the Highlnads-Scott game from last night. Scott was called for a technical for hanging on the rim in the third quarter. What is the exact rule? I know you’re not supposed to hang on the rim or pull yourself up unless there is a defender underneath the offensive player. Thanks

The rule book says to prevent injury.  I watched video at 2:58 in the 3Q.  Good call on the technical.  He pulled himself up on the rim when there was nobody around him or any risk of injury.
