Mayfield 49 Murray 14

Featured Replies

This game was the 2023 edition of Flag Fest.

Mayfield was much better than Murray in every phase of the game. Murray had -5 yards rushing at the half. We had at least 4 touchdowns called back by penalties. It was a strange game, but a big win nonetheless.

Yes a CRAZY amount of flags thrown in this game. And yes it is a huge rivalry game and I understand the refs trying to mitigate the situation to a certain degree but they kind of took the fun out of the game to an extent. Either way, no harm done, onto next week.

Each team was automatically penalized 3 times for showing up.

Does anyone know the penalty stats of last nights game?

I believe it was 251 yards in penalties between the two teams.

I know there is no such thing as a justified Mayfield penalty but that was one of the most sloppy and undisciplined Mayfield performances I’ve seen out of a Joe Morris coached team. Mayfield was clearly a better, older and more athletic team than Murray but they did have a lot of bad and unnecessary penalties. They have a lot to clean up if they want a state run but I expect them to fix that.

I agree. Somewhat.

But what about the penalty they called roughing the kicker and the play where the Murray receiver came back in bounds and pushed the Mayfield defender and caught the ball for a touchdown. You’re right about being a undisciplined team. I expect that from Murray but not Mayfield.

Murray brings out the worst in Mayfield. It’s a bitter rivalry with no love lost. The Mayfield-Murray game is almost always way more chippy than the crosstown rival Graves County game or the Paducah Tilghman game. I’m not making any excuses for the penalties. It just is what it is. These teams will likely meet in the 2nd round of the playoffs and I’m sure that game will be the same way.

There does seem to be a disdain among Mayfield folks for Murray and it seems more of a thing from the past than it seems from current/recent players even though the recent Murray wins. Maybe it’s just that both of those teams are in the same district and class a lot and Mayfield’s other rivals are in different classes.

I’ve never been able to pinpoint the exact reason but you are correct, the older generation of Mayfield fans have a special kind of hatred for Murray.
