Small roster substitution

Featured Replies

I thought this was interesting. I'm sure some KY teams already do this.

HS kids have amazing stamina. Two way guys by week 4 are barely feeling it and become almost insulted when you take them out. By Week 10 when it turns cold, there is almost no wear down in them. Many of the best players I have seen never came off the field.

While I think it’s great to develop depth and in todays age and mind set that every one deserves to play. I just don’t agree I’m more old school and I feel every spot should be earned and not given. If the players are not physically fit or able to play the position then you are not only hurting the overall team but doing a disservice to that young man as well. A lot of teams play the majority of their players both ways and I know it isn’t ideal but it’s high school football it’s incredibly hard to field a team of 22+ equally as good players when the majority of the team isn’t recruited or anything like that. Larger schools that can recruit yearly can put together a closer roster that allows players to play one way but not every school can. Also after playing this way for weeks it just becomes normal for the player and they don’t mind it physically or mentally it just becomes the norm. Nice idea in theory just not one that can be performed at every school in every situation.

I played on teams that, on a good year, maybe had 25 kids. We all played both ways a lot of the time. We conditioned in practice to be able to do that. We actually took pride in it.

While a lot of guys played both ways, everybody that was good enough to get some playing time usually did.

Sometimes it's just a necessity.  But ideally if you can keep you interior 5 olinemen and your front 4 Dlinemen from going both ways I think it's best.  I personally think it matters with the big guys more than your skill players.  But that's just my opinion.

I'm with you on this. If I'm a coach, developing enough quality bodies at the line of scrimmage to play them all one way would be a huge priority. Unless you've got a kid who's simply too good not to go both ways, like Selm at Simon Kenton. Even then, have someone to spell him for a series here and there.

I believe if your best Linebacker is also your best running back then he needs to be in almost every play. So yes I believe playing the best players both ways if they are the best at one offensive and one defensive position.

Yes. But you still need to develop someone that can provide a breather for that player, as those are two of the most demanding positions on the field.
