Looks like they are thinking he's the man to build the team around.   Unless of course they lose 100 games again this season and trade him off to start another rebuild.

Could this be another Homer Bailey deal?  Sure hope not.

The average pay over 6 years places him in the mid 60's as far as MLB Starting Pitching salary.

Surely no one thinks this is a bad deal for the Reds.

How is it a "Big" gamble? That's not a lot of money in today's game. He might crap out, sure. You have that same gamble with every young player. If the Reds wait until he is a full fledged proven star, it would cost 3, 4, 5, maybe 10 times as much and odds are he'd be gone. At which point everyone would be whining that the Reds didn't lock him up when they could still afford him.

I hope you are right.

I thought he was a bad use of a first-round draft choice when we drafted him, and here six years later I continue to stand by that opinion.

While we are getting good innings from him right now, albeit four of five, youngsters who throw 100mph, and have already experienced arm trouble, probably have a date with the IR list before long.

Again, I hope I'm wrong, I like the kid - Smart, articulate, etc., He checks all of the boxes, but he hasn't done a thing for us yet.

I think I read the Reds had no one under contract after this season until signing him...except maybe Votto.

Greene definitely has talent, it is wishful thinking that the Reds put a coaching staff around him to help him harness that talent.

So true, a lot of hype.  He has produced a 5/13 record with a 4.42 ERA.

Great deal for the Reds.   If he's aces, they have him locked in.  If he's not what they expect, being under contract makes him easier to trade than if he's headed into Free Agency.

Homer Bailey's deal was 6 years and 105 million and signed years ago. Greene's is the same amount of time and 53 million, which is nothing in today's game. 

If Hunter Greene had an absolute breakdown next season, it still wouldn't touch the Homer Bailey deal. That thing ranks as one of the worst signings in MLB history. 

Drawing 7 thousand fans might make the deal about equal.LOL

I believe their plan is to extend no one after these team friendly type deals.  I would expect he will be traded in 5 years and the cycle continues.  I'm not saying that to be negative.  It's the fiscally responsible thing to do if you are a small market team.  Fans won't be happy though.

I have no problem with this at all. This is how small market teams need to operate. The key is having the scouting and development to be able to make that trade pay dividends in 5-6 years. 

As a fan, it would be more ideal to have a deep pockets owner buy the team that can spend huge money without a care, but that's not the case now or anytime soon. 

While it's an albatross now, I'll go to my grave making the argument that overall the Votto contract was worth every penny as far as production value (especially in the middle of it) compared to what the rest of MLB teams were spending. I often wonder, if the Reds sign him to a team friendly 4-5 year deal upfront and trade him for prospects after 4, how different these last handful of years look.

Mr. Greene is starting to rub me the wrong way.  He needs a lesson or two in "maintaining a low profile."

During the delay at Pittsburgh Saturday night, prior to the start of the game, Jim Day took a tour of Greens bezillion dollar mansion in Arizona, with all of the tapestries of the rich and famous.  He has another here in Cincinnati that is in the lap of luxury.  

He needs to take a page out of Barry Larkin's playbook.  I'm sure that Larkin has equally as opulent homes, but he doesn't flaunt them all over TV.  Whether I'm fond of him or not, he has at least earned them.  Green has done nothing of a sort.  He has no "Earnings" merely speculation money. 

Perhaps he needs to produce and show those of us who put up the money that are affording him these luxuries, before he starts flaunting these and his lifestyle on TV.

I'm not going to lie... this is laughable. Sometimes I wonder why you tune in to the Reds at all, it's constantly a complaint about today's game and players. The Reds deserve very little praise anyway, but knocking Hunter Greene for anything off the field is comical. It was one of the top reasons he was a top draft pick on so many boards.
