2023 St. Elizabeth NKAC JV Regional Tournament

Featured Replies

The JV tournament is underway.  I believe all the first rounds games have been played.  I would have to assume NDA is the favorite again this year.  The second round is 1/29.  I am not sure if I attached the file correctly.  The first weekend game results are on the bracket.  The second week winners that I know of are NDA over Beechwood, SK over Boone and Holy Cross over Dixie.

The semi finals and finals of the girls JV tournament were today . In the first semifinal Cooper beat Campbell.  In the second Holy Cross beat NDA.  Cooper beat HC in the finals.  HC was winning at the end of the first quarter then Cooper took a three point lead at the half and gradually stretched it out over the second half blowing it open the end of the fourth quarter.  No all tournament team for either the JV or freshman tournament which I thought was strange but there were co MVPs Haylle Noel and Zene Thompson. They were some fun games to watch.  I would have liked to have seen my Indians win but they ran out of gas and Cooper is a tough team.  Congrats

NDA’s Addie Lawrie was the MVP of the freshman tournament.  Congratulations Addie!

Since you mentioned it, and I'm going off of third-hand info here, but I heard Notre Dame was led in scoring in the Championship game by an 8th grader.  Now, admittedly, I didn't think NDA did that, so that caught me off guard.  How long has that been a thing?

This is the first year ever in my recollection. The numbers for basketball were so low, they opened it up to the feeder schools and they got 3 8th graders to play. Amelia Stallard (had 20 points in final) Addie Mauller - both from St Agnes and Caitlin Ross from St Pius

This is surprising, but not unexpected. If I've read the latest enrollment numbers correctly, NDA is now around 500 students. That's tweener range - large school to medium.

Soccer rosters are 60+ and volleyball is close to 50. Even with historically high participation numbers, you start to spread yourself thin.

Without checking,* I doubt if there are many schools in the state, much less the 9th Region, that don't have a few junior high age basketball players.

* Assumption, Manual, Mercy, and Sacred Heart come to mind.

I am confused on “feeder schools”? Thought there was no such thing anymore.

While anyone in the diocese can go to any high school without paying additional there are still traditional feeder schools.  Other high schools are not allowed to actively pursue these students.  NDA and CCH have by far the biggest feeder system with St. Pius, Blessed Sacrament, St. Agnes and St. Joe’s crescent Springs.  I don’t think anyone else is even close.
I would guess the low numbers are multifactorial. First volleyball and soccer are killing girls basketball. Second, their sophomore class is loaded. If I was a freshman seeing 10 to 15 kids ahead of me unless I was a superstar I wouldn’t have a chance to play varsity  until my senior year.  It might discourage me from playing and encourage me to find another activity or sport I enjoy.

This is 100% accurate regarding the feeder system for NDA and CCH, and the numbers impact that the sophomore class seems to be having on the freshman class. That being said, Notre Dame and CCH are held to a very tight restriction on who is eligible as a feeder school. NDA and CCH basically cannot allow any student from a school other than the schools that rjal listed anywhere near their program until after they receive their 8th grade diploma. While students from the NDA and CCH feeder schools can participate in sports at other diocesan high schools during junior high. Not complaining just stating facts.
