Dragons handle business in the first game of the Swauger Holiday Classic.

They must have the most unbalanced schedule ever. How can it be fun to play in nothing but blowouts?

Either you are correct with the schedule, or they are really on or really off each night. Tough to figure out.

It’s the schedule. I’m new to this site so haven’t figured out if it’s a site for real truth telling- not over the top- or a friendly “chat each team up” message board. South is horrific.  The schools they have beaten are all absolutely awful.  Tiny. Unathletic. Low skill teams. South would struggle to win the butler freshman tourney.

Truth is, S. Oldham just is not very good this year.

It all comes down to shooting.  South shoots a ton of threes.  Shooting cures all

Let me guess: your opinion is the one that is “real truth”?

I’m not sure how good, or bad, South Oldham will be.  It’s early.  Is “horrific” 50+ points better than “absolutely awful”?  Looking at their scores - losing to Eastern and Christian Academy each by 4 (I think), beating Beechwood by 20+ - doesn’t necessarily reflect ‘horrific.’ It sounds to me like you just don’t like the coach, and it’s impacting how you see this team.

Coach Simpson does a great job and class act.  One of the best of the 8th region!! Beechwood is solid.  Congrats on Win

never met the coach and have no rooting interest in any 8th region team.  Just very familiar with the region. That’s why I was asking if this message board is meant to be a real convo or a bunch of positive threads about all teams.  I guess some of both…

There's an example of the Dunning-Kruger effect going on up in here.

Well said.

South does not appear to have one of the better teams the school has had over the last 20 years....but  being "down" is ultimately inevitable at some point....it's just difficult to stomach (as a fan) when your team has had the incredible success the Dragons have had this past decade, winning 3 of the last 9 region titles.

But even suggesting Steve Simpson is anything but an incredible coach would be unwise.    Hard to argue with 400+ wins, three Sweet 16 appearances, and pretty much all the school records of any type.    There's a reason why the folks in Crestwood have already named the court after him.

Even good coaches have to deal with sub-par seasons every now and then.

I'm no expert, but I've been the broadcast voice of the 8th Region for nearly 30 years, and have covered all the Oldham County schools since 1979 (1989, in the case of South), so I can at least say that I've seen a game or two.   The bottom line is this:   Even great programs have down years.

But it's still early, early in the season.    Way to early to be throwing stones.

This is the 3rd straight year they haven’t been very good. That’s not to say he’s not a great person or had success in the past. The truth is they had some real superstars in the past- elite talent most coaches would win with.  I said a few weeks ago and it’s a fact- if you can’t shoot the 3 he will not play you- that is the only thing he cares about. And that has lead to a number of very good athletes/basketball players who would could have helped make them tougher, better defensively and more athletic not play or transfer to other schools.

Sometimes the numbers just don't lie....

Over 400 career wins at South...

The eight winningest seasons in school history....

Three region 8 titles in just the last nine years....

And obviously, the folks in Crestwood appreciate what he's done in the past....his name is already on the court....

As for "the third straight year they haven't been very good....", well, 2021 was a wash, period, for everyone.   COVID took care of that.    The teams couldn't play summer ball, or practice in a normal fashion.   Players missed games and games were cancelled.    I wouldn't judge any team by the 2020-1 season.

2021-2 was a "down" year for South - but it was one of only five losing seasons in Simpson's 22 previous seasons with the school.

This year?   Way too early to tell how this year's South team will far to be casting stones in December.
