Lawrence County 35 Belfry 21

Featured Replies

From the Belfry Pirates Facebook page:

Some bad calls against us, but in the end we layed it on the ground too many times. The second half was a disaster. Looking pretty dismal sitting at 4-4. Very disappointing second half. The playoffs got much harder for us tonight. Chances to host a playoff game was probably lost tonight. Pirates close out the Home schedule next week vs. Pike Central.

They’ll finish second and host a first round game for sure. Not sure what their Facebook page is saying here.

I know that Belfry is used to dominating, but this seems unnecessarily “glass is half empty.” My guess is that they are probably still playing on Nov. 18.

If my numbers are correct, this is the first regular season district loss for Belfry since falling to Sheldon Clark in 2010 and only the fourth in the last 27 years (Sheldon Clark in 2006, Prestonsburg in both 2000 and 2001).

That sounds like an uninformed fan reaction and not a team affiliated post. Of course Belfry will still host a playoff game barring a complete meltdown against Pike Central.  That Facebook page should do better.

I heard a lot of complaints about the officials but it’s just sour grapes.  Calls were pretty even in my opinion even if there were a few bad ones.   The game was won, and lost, by the guys wearing helmets and not stripes.

Belfry built a good lead in first half but couldn’t put them away.  Then big Mo shifted and turnovers were a big time problem.

Give Lawrence Co credit, they played well and took advantage when they needed to.  They actually took a knee deep in Belfry territory late to avoid another score. No Pirate fan wants to lose but I’m lying if I don’t admit it was cool to see the excitement on the Bulldogs sideline and in the stands as the final ticks ran off the clock.  21 straight losses to a district opponent is tough to handle.

Sheldon Clark got them more twice I think, but still an incredible stat.

Edit: I didn’t see the “regular season” part of your post.  You may be right on that (you always are ?)

Sheldon Clark got them in the playoffs in  1998 and 2009 (both times Sheldon Clark won the region) but only in regular season in 2006 & 2010.

In some parts of the state the fans would be bashing a legend like Coach Haywood. I think the Belfry faithful are above that. When the winds of November blow a great running attack is tough to beat.

I looked that page up, it is indeed a fan page.  Glad it wasn't somebody from BHS making excuses and getting the details wrong.

This is a year of the unknowns in 3A outside of Cal you have Hart, Casey Lawrence and even Union who have been good the last couple years but has no gold to show for it. So could be a unexpected team facing Cal in the championship this year.
