Central (2-3) at South Warren (2-2)

These two have played 3 times before:

2014:  Central 16 South 14 – In Coach Smith’s first season at South Warren, the 3A Spartans went to Louisville and lost a close battle with QB Ryder Litton leading the Spartan charge.

2019:  South 22 Central 8 – South, now 5A, goes back to Louisville and the Spartan defense was the story limiting Central to 77 total yards in the game.

2021:  South 20 Central 6 – South in Louisville again and Spartan QB Caden Veltcamp plays well, but Central played South as well as any team outside of the Hendersonville, TN loss last season.

The Central Yellow Jackets were ranked #6 in the BGPs 4A Poll last week.  Their record is not great (2-3), but an understanding of their opponents should be known.  Central has wins over 6A Butler and 6A Fern Creek (last week).  They have losses to 6A #1 St X and 6A #3 Manual and 3A #5 Belfry on the road.  So the Yellow Jackets, pound for pound, may play the toughest schedule in the state (now going to 5A #3 South Warren).  The Yellow Jackets are led by SO RB Stone Cortez (GREAT Name!) who has 520 yards and 4 TDs on the year (against THAT schedule – WOW!).  He will be the focus of the Spartan defense for sure.

For South Warren, they get back to 500 last week with a convincing 36-3 win over 3A Paducah Tilghman.  South’s defense controlled the game obviously.  I don't have any stats yet so if you know some, please add.  Paducah Tilghman is a good team.  This was their first game back from an all out war with Rival Mayfield.  And to have to go to South Warren after that is pretty tough.  They will bounce back.  It was good to get back in the win column for the Spartans.

This weeks game should be an interesting one.  However and historically, one dimensional teams, especially run oriented 1-dimentional teams, have not faired well vs South Warren defenses.  In the 3 series games, Central has a total of 30 points.  Don’t think 10 points will be enough for Central on Friday night.  But should be a tough physical game.  Who do you have in this one?

South Warren easy win over a 2-3 4A opponent.

Jab, Jab, Uppercut.

I like Central and almost always pull for them, but I don't see any way they win this one - especially after losing to 3A Belfry (not that Belfry is any kind of a slouch).

The Jackets have no fear in terms of scheduling leviathans...they've already played St. X and Manual this season, who are ranked 1st and 2nd in 6A. But this one will more than likely end up going something along the line of those two games. Probably won't be a running clock for the Spartans, but it could get close to it by the end.
