Call me crazy, but I called the WC win, and I'm still calling them to win the whole Sweet 16

  • Congratulations to Warren Central and the WC Fans, especially @DragonFire and @BIG BLACK JACK! I knew WC had a chance, but I wouldn't have picked them.  But that's why you play the game.  No one

111 total points scored in the game, just like I predicted. All of you are always a step behind Randall.

I was a senior when Warren Central lost to Male in overtime in 2002. This exorcised some demons.

Mildly surprising I guess.  Just read yesterday that Male hasn’t won a state title since 1975, which is pretty hard to believe.  Was talking to a Louisville high school coach yesterday, he said the Ballard job is the best job in the 7th region (which makes it probably the best job in the state).  I tend to think of Ballard and Male as 1 and 1A, but I guess that’s not the common perception - there’s more distance than that between the two in terms of pecking order.  Eastern is a mystery - it’s in some ways a mirror of Ballard, but for whatever reason isn’t in the same stratosphere.  The coach’s point was it’s ironic the best job in the 7th Region and the best job in the 8th Region are open at the same time.

What is the best job in the 8th?

That was my very first time in Rupp.

Consider that Male started 6/6 from the field and then went 12/40 the rest of the game. Crazy. Also crazy that Central won going 1/9 from three and never led by more than 4. This team just finds ways to win.

They have a top-tier program with a good coach. Excellent program for many years. They still aren't the favorite but Warren Central winning the whole thing wouldn't surprise me.

Well, according to the coach I was talking to, it’s Oldham County.

For sure. They’ve got talent, but not having the big time D1 guy has allowed them to somehow still stay below radar. If they had a true big man I think would actually pick them to win it all. I didn’t pick them to win this game, but I never doubted that they could. They opened some eyes today.

I knew WC had a chance, but I wouldn't have picked them.  But that's why you play the game.  No one hotter right now!  They may not be the favorite now, but they are very dangerous and now truly believe they can win it all.

So Male now almost a half century and Ballard a nearly a quarter century since their last titles. Perceptions, eh?

I'm a fan of both, but I grew up watching Jim Huter and Wade Houston coached High teams. The Male "brand" for me still has the best cache'.

Trinity is now in the mix. Winning a title, top program or not, is still a rare thing to be savored. Until the Bulldogs or Bruins is the last team standing at the dance at Rupp, are they now really battling for more than Louisville supremacy?

Good questions, don’t know the answers.  Honestly, until you just reminded me of how long it’s been since Ballard won the title (1999?) I had forgotten. My “perception” that Ballard and Male are the two basketball powers and best coaching jobs in the 7th Region, and the presumption that by extension that makes them two of the best in the state, no doubt has some Louisville bias - as I sit here in the Louisville suburbs.  Would someone in, say, the 13th or 3rd Region have that view?  Maybe not, I don’t know.  I do have to say, when it’s going on 50 years (Male) and 25 years (Ballard) since they’ve won titles, you have to wonder just how powerful those programs are….

They are the best jobs in town NO doubt   but only one of them can go to Rupp at a time.

Ive always said and I still believe that a one school county is the BEST place to have consistent success. You can implement your plan, your drills, and your culture from the time kids pick up a basketball. Kids dream of playing for the team as soon as they go to their first game.

In bigger cities/counties, many kids have  no idea where they are going to school until in 8th grade (or even if they will stay there!)

Trinity has 2 state championships in the last 10 years. Id say Mike Szabo has a pretty good 7th region job.

Agree he does but Male and Ballard are different than T.

Szabo now the dean of coaches in the city I believe?
