2007 Ashland

Featured Replies

Anything new around the Tomcat program? How is Thomas looking at QB and will Ashland look to run some option attack with him at the QB position or just spread out defenses with wide outs and let him do damage with his legs that way.

The Ashland Tomcat football program has been ther efor years and years and it ios not going anywhere. Ashland willl be a team to be dealt with again this season. Traditions like the Ashland program do not go away. Good luck agin to all my friends in Tomcat Land :ylsuper: (except for week 1 ;) )

What exactly happened with the Mahan kid?

Good question?

ashland will be fine may get a boost, talk to our oh buddy painter he can feel you in!:thumb:

Back traveling with the dark side again huh?:thumb:

Mahan got in trouble 1 too many times at school and it cost him.

Where are the players(Seniors) playing college ball from the 2006 team?

Fields Davis-Wittenberg

Luke Bonner-Wittneberg

Drew Mcdavid-Georgetown

Josh Cordle-Hanover

Michael Walters-KCU

So how did the tomcats do at the passing tournment without him? Would he had been a big factor???

Ha got to many good friends in maroon land:thumb:

Like others said before, I think Ashland will be fine... but I think they can do one of two things: 1. come out meaning business and fully reloaded, or

2. take a game or two to really get into rythm and win games like they did last year.

But there's no way they are gonna go out and just bomb the whole season, they'll lose no more than three or four games (including the playoffs).

Tomcat fans have been quite this summer. It’s probably because we’re not sure what we have yet – I know I’m not. The Team is young and has some proving to do.

What’s unusual about this year’s team is that we don’t have any returning starters except Matt Thomas - and he is playing a new position (QB). Although he has never played this position he is a gifted athlete, a good student and is well respected by his team. He should provide much needed senior leadership in this new role. Tyler Sloan (Sr.) and Trey Keaton (Jr.) both started a few games last year (while seniors were injured) so they have some quality varsity experience. Several other upper-classmen, although not starters, saw playing time last year and should be ready to step up.

The Tomcats are at “Camp Tomcat” this week and the coaches are working to whip them into shape. The early indicators are that our FBs will be Jeremy Nethercutt (Sr.) and Josh Alber (So.) – Both are hard runners and strong.

RBs look to be: Blake McLeod (Jr.-injured, but returning soon), Josh Miller (Jr.) and Rashard Carter (So.). All 3 are fast and the coach should be able to keep fresh legs in the game to complement Thomas at QB. IMO Carter has a lot of potential and could be a difference maker.

The Linemen have good size and speed. Coach Love and Hale are working with the OL this year and are pushing them hard. This year’s OL has the potential to be good.

It’s too soon to know much. But, as I’ve watched practices I’ve seen them improving. I hope that they will be ready early in the season and that they will live up to their potential.

I'm very interested to see how Mr. Thomas does playing QB next year. Matts athleticism will take him a long way. QB is the one spot on the field though where athleticism eventually becomes less important than decision making. It's gonna be tough for Matt (as it would be for any kid) to make that kind of transition.

I have a feeling he's gonna give defensive coaches fits when he scrambles for 20 or 30 yards a few times.

Any of the Ashland fans out there care to give an honest pre season ranking of the T Cats in their region ?

I think Ashland's performance this year is going to be surprising one way or the other. I dont believe they will have a mediocre team, they will either achieve highly or achieve poorly, and right now that is hard to judge. I have a hard time justifying Thomas at QB, but if that is what they have in mind then we will see how it works.

I regret my previous post because I forgot some names. We actually have more returning starters than I posted:

Kyle Poplin (Sr.)

Ryan Bonner (Jr.) - Luke’s brother

Daniel McDavid (Jr.) – Drew’s brother

At my age forgetting things is a way of life and I should avoid lists of names. I apologize for the omissions – I hope there aren’t any others.

:thumb: That is not an Ashland / Graybeard only problem ;) . I forget just about everything myself. I would list what kind of things things but I forgot. :D

Funnny thing is that can remember things from back in high school and couldn't tell you what I had for supper yesterday.

I don't believe Poplin ever started a game for Ashland.

I've been to a few practices and every practice I come away with a different opinion on the team. The defense has a few kids who can make some plays but they are very weak at the LB spot. The secondary looks to be pretty good with a few players who got some playing time last year, and the D line looks ok with Bonner and Nethercutt at DE's.

I haven't watched much offense but it seems the coaches are trying to get Matt out of the pocket and pressuring the Defense to either commit to him running of throwing on the run.
