Last District Game!

Greenwood at South Warren

South Warren holds an 8-1 advantage all time vs Greenwood.  Although the 2016 17-16 Greenwood win is memorable.  And most of the 8 games South has won have not been close games.  I don’t look for this game to be close, especially after last Friday night.

Last Week:

Greenwood has had some good teams in the past and I think they have a pretty good team this season.  But when a very good 3A Glasgow team kinda dominated them 37-16, that was a signal that their 6-1 record, while impressive, likely isn’t 5A Top 10 worthy.  That proved to be the case with even after a week off to prepare, Greenwood was defeated by Bowling Green 38-8 in a game that wasn’t really that close; just too many turnovers from the Gators and no offensive agenda that could muster anything against a very good BG defense.

South Warren traveled to Christian County last Thursday night and walked out with a 51-20 win.  But most Spartan fans will likely agree it was not their best effort of the season.  While I expected a let-down after a very good effort against Bowling Green, the Spartan coaches, reportedly, were all over the players to not have a let down vs McCracken County the next week and they did not.  However, you just can’t go 10-15 straight weeks and play your top, emotionally charged, effort every week.  I felt this played out at Christian County, as the Colonels scored 13 points on South’s first team defense, which is very unexpected.  Did it matter in the game?  Nope.  But just goes to show, you are going to play better some weeks than others.  I don’t have any stats for this game, but know South was the far superior team.

This Week:

Plain and simple, I look for a running clock second or third quarter in this game.  South will have a tough week of practice and their first team defense will play well and that means bad news for the Gators.

Am I wrong?  Who wins this game and what are the keys?

Is Greenwood a perennial doormat, or were they competitive at one point? I see them spoken about on here a lot, usually not in a positive manner. Is that because at some point, they were the big dog, and now they have fallen on hard times?

I would say doormat is a harsh term for what Greenwood has experienced in football only.  They were created IMO as a county school as the Warren County population grew to hopefully compete with Bowling Green.  This was at a time that Warren Central was still really good.  Greenwood started to really improve as Warren Central continued to be picked apart and by 2008 and 2009, Greenwood was a really solid team, as evidence by getting to the 4A Semi-Finals and playing X respectably with a 28-7 loss.

But South Warren came online around 2010 and football wise, Greenwood hasn't been the same since.  They have some good players, but they are always going to be behind the 8-ball when it comes to competing with South Warren and Bowling Green IMO.

So Greenwood is a Warren Co team? Sorry I am not familiar with that area. So the schools there are South and Central Warren, Greenwood and Bowling Green.

And Greenwood  was started in the 2000s?

Yes, Greenwood is a Warren County team.  No problem.

Warren County teams include:  Bowling Green, South Warren, Greenwood, Warren Central and Warren East.

As @TheBarbersaid, GW opened in 1990 and he is correct, this game will get ugly quick as GW will not be able to move the ball, producing short fields for South's offense.

South should be able to beat Greenwood by at least 28 points. But, as Purple88 stated, some weeks you play better than others. I think the coaches are going to motivate South's Defense this week. I expect them to step up quite a bit against Greenwood early on.

With that being said, South's pass coverage is not the best. If Greenwood's O-line can hold off the pass rush, they will have some opportunities to make some plays.

Greenwood opened in like 1989 or 1990 in there somewhere.  South Warren opened in like 2008 maybe?  Somewhere in there. They both are in the Warren County School System along with Warren East and Warren Central.

Bowling Green is an independent school district in the City of Bowling Green.
