As my old coach used to say, "If you can do better, do it, if you can't, shutup!"

But what did he say when he was the recipient of a bad call by one of the stripes???:D

Maybe he said, sign me up Scotty.:p

He might have questioned a call, but he also was an official himself and never accused a coach of "costing him a game" or "cheating" him. He understood that officials are human and humans make mistakes.

This thread was started simply because I hear so much whining about officials. Hey, I have been critical of officials at times, they sometimes have a bad game, just like players and coaches. But it has become ridiculous in some threads. I am not an official, but I know how hard those guys work and try their best each night for little money and a LOT of abuse.

Just thought that if those who like to abuse them think they can do better, they have an opportunity to get involved and prove it!

When I scew up at my job I get criticized. So do radio announcers. When you operate in the public arena your actions will be scrutinized and must of us have some accountability. Referees should be no different. Therre are some good ones and some bad ones. I agree that in our region there are no referees intionally cheating anyone...but there are some incompetent ones out there and it is fair to point that out.

I agree with you to a point Bogey, but when you screw up, are there 100 people ready to pounce on you in a forum such as Bluegrasspreps? That was the reason I started this thread. As I stated, on the air, I can be somewhat critical of some bad calls. And I agree totally that there are some incompetent officials out there and it is fair to point that out...AT THE GAME! But to come in some forum and hide behind an avitar and screen name is not fair to those good ones out there. I know you do a fine job and I respect your position, and YES you get your fair share of criticism (undeserved, I might add) but how many times has someone come online and talked about you?

Just a thougth fellas, I have been on both sides of coaching and officiating in the past and now see the third side from the broadcast booth. I am not knocking anyone for expressing their opinions, it just seems that too many times we are quick to judge others. By the way, when was the last time you saw a thread on BGP praising an official for doing a good job? Or a team who was the beneficiary of a bad call come on here and abuse the officials. It's all about perspective!

Nuf said by me, let the Radio Announcer bashing begin!

Bogey you and Himmelfarb forget that you do not set the standard for officials and therefore are in no position to deem who is incompetent and who is not. Just because you watch a lot of basketball does not make you an authority on the game. I venture to say that most folks have no idea what it takes to become an offcial as far as the training and time spent by these guys. The better officials spend a tremendous amount of time and money to attend camps just to make themselves better. Why? Simply because they love what they do. Too many quit well before they should simply because the grief they get from people who THINK they know the rules better than them.

Nice post Stripedshirt...

What is the old-addage...If you can't beat'em...join'em...

The link has been provided by a very gracious GoRadio...so come on boys lets throw it up and start the game...we can never have enough refs.

For the most part stripedshirt, I do not feel that fans complain about calls based on rules. They grieve over calls made by poor judgement. As a coach I tend to judge a good official by a few things but the main thing I try to consider for judgement is this: Did he/she make the obvious calls and can I even remember him/her making any calls at all. If a game is called well, then I should not even be able to tell if a particular official was at the game. I personally believe that officials are well intentioned but for some, they just dont get IT. Dont understand flow of the game, emotion, etc. That comes from playing and playing at a high level, which I suspect that a large majority of officials did not come from that background

Careful Crimedoc, you're fixin' to get a T, seatbelted for the rest of the day!

There is nothing worse than going to a game and seeing an official try to take the game over. I've been to my fair share of games in my life and nothing bothers me more than to see a ref that likes the spotlight. I could never understand how a ref out by the half court line can call a charge or a blocking foul that occurs underneath the basket and meanwhile the ref who is right there on the baseline calls nothing. That is ridiculous. It's also very hard for the kids in the game when you are dealing with two refs that call the game in totally different ways. It has to be frustrating when one ref lets you play and the other calls everything with contact. I do think for the most part refs at the high school level are out there giving it their all and trying their best to call a fair game. But there are some bad ones out there and if fans get upset either here or at the game shouldnt be a problem as long as it doesnt go too far. I think they understood going into this decision to ref that they were going to be open for criticism.

Preach it brother! But be careful, there are those lurking like wolves in striped lambs clothing that will take offense to that comment.
