I called games in my younger years and to me calls just happened. I was never looking for something. The game was played and the teams dictated the ebbs and flows. If I saw a violation I blew the whistle if I didn't I kept silent. I never tried to micromanage a basketball game. These thoughts helped me. I see officials sometimes try to control situations, I think that it is a bad move by the official. You obviously can't let players get out of hand not what I mean.

No way that is true. I am old.

I would just like to see refs call the game the same way for starter/subs/stars/big man/small man. And I just don't see it! Forget a big man sub coming into a game...might as well put two fouls on him before he leaves the bench! Saw the HC/Trinity game. HC guards were mauling the Trinity guards...no calls! I have refereed. It is difficult and takes practice and skill (and it helps to not hear well). Having said that, however, it is unhealthy for any person in power - and yes refs have power - to not have accountability.

One thing that has bothered me this year as well and I know alot of you might disagree with me but ever since the college game started paying closer attention to palming the ball the high school refs have done the same. And I think a little too far. It's one thing to call a palming violation on a kid who is being guarded and uses the palming to gain an advantage on his opponent but it just seems like a little too much to call it on a PG who is bringing the ball up the floor with no one on him. This is a classic case of power tripping to me. I know its a violation but come on. I dont think they had that kind of senseless call in mind when they came up with the rule. You dont see them call that in college. They have called it alot more though when the player is being guarded and I dont mind that at all. But I have seen a bunch of games this year at the high school level when the ref should have just let that go.

I have been informed that one of my previous posts in the Girls forum was in violation of BGP rules and therefore deleted. While I respectfully disagree with the moderators decision I want to apologize to anyone who may have been upset by my comments. I have no alegiance to any school but am a big fan of high school sports in general with a special affection for hoops. Having officiated mulitple sports in the past on different levels of play I will always be in support of the official. I am too easily drawn into debates about officiating and now realize it is not worth it to respond. From here forward I will resign myself to a "read only" status and no longer be posting

Im just saying that they are starting to stress the palming call this year and thats fine but when a kid is walking the ball up the floor and no one is within twenty feet of him and the ref calls a palming violation, I think its a little too much. Its the same as if a ref doesnt call the game as tight as they were in the beginning of the game once a team is down by like 20 with a minute to play. They tend to let some things go just to get the game over and not prolong the beating.
