The flu hasn't gone anywhere.  Furthermore, I am concerned this coming flu season could be severe.  I will definitely be getting my flu shot and hoping the powers that be guessed right on the strains.

I don't get the people who keep beating the "but what about the flu vaccine" drum. Doctors have been begging people to get the flu vaccine for literally 40 years now....not at all unlike the way doctors are begging people to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

I went to the doctor for a checkup to get some prescriptions refilled like three weeks ago...had the CNA who took my vitals remind me to get my flu vaccine, had my doctor remind me to get my flu vaccine, and had the receptionist who scheduled my next checkup in 6 months remind me to get my flu vaccine.

It hasn't been flu season for like 4 months now. If I don't dust around my house for 4 months, I'm pretty sure there'd be a good number of places where the dust would have gathered.

I'm slow  to respond to all of this, because despite the fact that I've been working elbows-deep on the front lines of the covid pandemic, most Kentuckians don't care about the truth.

It is the unvaccinated that are filling up hospitals right now. There's no way around that argument. I work in a large hospital system with 2 major medical centers, a 3rd community hospital, a 4th still-smaller hospital, and closing in on 5 critical access satellite hospitals. Granted, we exist primarily in Indiana and Illinois, but two of our hospitals are in Kentucky, and they ALL funnel critical care admissions into our 2 major medical centers. 95+% of our covid related deaths since April have been in the unvaccinated, 90+% of our covid related ICU admissions since April have been in the unvaccinated, and 85+% of our total overall hospitalizations have been in the unvaccinated. Elderly, medically complex vaccinated people are getting discharged from the ER without having to be admitted, while "otherwise healthy" middle-aged unvaccinated people are going to critical care/dying. You simply cannot debate the efficacy of the vaccine in terms of reducing the effects of infection. These statistics have been published and reproduced across any number of healthcare organizations in multiple states "masked" and "unmasked."

That said, I have some anecdotal evidence that the vaccine reduces transmission, as I am coaching in one of the highest risk activities. Two of my VACCINATED athletes have tested positive recently, both with minimal symptoms. We identified 6 athletes who met the definition of "primary contact," and all of which were UNVACCINATED. Not one of them has developed nary a sniffle. They've all tested negative and return(ed) to play with the last ones coming back tomorrow. They were exposed to each other while unmasked.

As @theguru stated: Covid is not going anywhere. It is with us "4life." Coronaviruses have been in existence years, and we have been trying to find the perfect vaccine/cure for "the common cold," for many years. That is one of the factors that allowed the vaccine to be created with such speed. There were 60-years of research into this, combined with the efforts of the best immunology experts from throughout the world working towards one common goal. 

At this point, teams who go under team-quarantine have no excuse. The answer to avoiding being quarantined is right under everyone's noses. I believe firmly in freedom of choice, especially when it comes to medical decision making, but I also believe there are consequences for every decision we make in life. Choosing not to be vaccinated means you might end up quarantined and not being able to play.

Frankly they do have an excuse.  The rules states that VACCINATED athletes who are exposed to COVID do not have to quarantine, but UNVACCINATED athletes who are exposed to COVID do have to quarantine even if they are ASYMPTOMATIC.  There is also proof that VACCINATED people are often ASYMPTOMATIC, so there for a VACCINATED athlete who is "exposed"(ban contact tracing), could have the virus and be ASYMPTOMATIC and spread the virus to teammates while UNVACCINATED ASYMPTOMATIC athletes who were exposed could be at home for no reason while their VACCINATED teammates possibly spread the virus. This post is not ANTI-VAX, it's ANTI-Lack of common sense when it comes to the joke that is contact tracing and guidelines. It's real simple.. WAIVER.  The sad reality is this, the virus has be manipulated by many which has made many uncertain about what to believe even when it involved medical experts, etc.

All I have in regards to vaccinated people transmitting the virus is anecdotal evidence, but here goes:

1 of my vaccinated athletes had some "allergies," went to the doctor was not tested but was told "You get this every year, there's no reason to test you." At practice on a Thursday was straight up "in the grill" of 3 of my other athletes who were unvaccinated for about 30 minutes. On Friday, lost sense of taste/smell and tested positive. We quarantined all four. The 3 unvaccinated tested negative this week and will be back tomorrow. The vaccinated symptoms never got any worse.

1 of my vaccinated athletes stayed with an unvaccinated athlete and family over a weekend. Tested positive on Monday after developing vomiting. No one else has tested positive. Vaccinated athlete's symptoms have not worsened.

A friends' vaccinated wife tested positive. He is vaccinated too, but they live in the same house, shared the same ventilation system, etc for two weeks and he tested 3 times and was negative all three times. She lost her sense of taste. He never developed a symptom.

These are small-scale, non-scientific examples. I understand that. They are part of a growing trend I'm seeing with people I know who are not only having minimal symptoms when they are vaccinated and have a breakthrough case, but they are also not spreading it to the people even in the same household.

Proofread and found a major error

My anecdotal experience was few weeks ago I worked with guy who was vaccinated and tested positive after losing taste and smell. I'm vaccinated and never got any symptoms despite being around this guy several hours indoor. Possibly I was asymptomatic but never got tested since never had any symptoms. Generally if vaccinated and get infected you have milder and/or shorter case. Based on recent hospital data here in Louisville, looks like vaccine reducing hospitalization by about 90%, and the vaccinated getting hospitalized are generally older with health issues.

There's a certain percentage of generally older who will get admitted vaccinated or not (not arguing with you, supporting/clarifying your statement). Here's an unknown mantra among emergency medical professionals: your age in years = percentage chance that you will admitted if you step foot into the emergency room.

92 years old = 92% chance of admission, even before we know your complaint.

Why?

Because no ER provider wants to be on the receiving end of risk management when he sent Nana home from the ER on Wednesday and "God calls her home" on Thursday. 

If they want to get the younger Americans to line up to take the shot I know one incentive that would lock that in.  FULL student loan forgiveness.
