December 19, 200619 yr Kick I mentioned that U.K. had Santa Clara and UMass this week on the schedule, I wasn't meaning that they should be in a U.K.I.T.. What I was trying to get across was instead of the scheduling of two home games like this U.K. could replace those games with a tournament. I personally like the idea of 2 other in state teams and then another out of state opponet. I wasn't confused with what you were saying Old Rambler. What I was saying was that the number of students attending UK sports games are a far cry from the number that attended in the 70's and 80's and that includes the games with the big name teams. While the students that do attend are vociferous there are a lot less of them.

December 20, 200619 yr Yes, I wish they would bring it back, there were some great games going all the way back to 1963 when the Cats beat Iowa 94-69, and beat West Virginia in the finals 79-75. Here's some other years: 1964:UK 108, Wisconsin 85. UK 98,Wake Forest 75 finals 1965:UK 102, West Virginia 78 Illinois 91,UK 86 finals I will list some more later.
December 20, 200619 yr I may be mistaken here, but I thought one of the reasons it was scrapped is because attendance wasn't very good because of all the softies UK had in the tournament. Fans weren't filling up the place because they knew it was going to be a beatdown.

(some for fear of a beatdown) When the talent level of the teams began to run out in the late 80's it was felt there was a time for a change. If I recall the real reason was Pitino wanted it scrapped. He wanted to take his team to the ECAC in New York and also play in the Great 8 type tourneys. Pitino didn't like being stuck in Lexington over Xmas break when he thought he could get some big games or a tourney in a better spot.

Hit the nail on the head. :thumb: With the students being gone it was a great chance to get tickets. Someone said that attendence was down, but they where still getting 20k+.
