Turf Fields for Baseball

Featured Replies

As someone that played a lot of games on turf, give me turf over 90% of baseball fields in the state of Kentucky. The fact is simply, the majority of schools in KY don’t have the resources or don’t have the know-how to properly maintain a grass and dirt field. There are so many bad fields in the state and have been forever. No one is going to choose a turf field over a perfectly manicured field, but playing baseball on the majority of the fields in the state is not fun.

Honestly, I’ve been on almost every field in NKY, and many in Lexington, and I do not agree with 90% of them being bad. Some are dreadful. Most a good. Many are great. Almost all are better than what I played on 30 years ago in High school, and some are on the level of the college fields I played on.

I believe Taylor County has added turf for baseball. All part of a huge renovation of their athletic facilities that included turf on their football stadium this past season.

Pleasure Ridge Park has a turf infield; I think their outfield is grass, though, if I recall correctly.

There probably isn’t a field in NKy that need turf more than Meinken. That field was tragically bad back when I played. Always hated those trips to play Holmes or Holy Cross because of this field. Looks phenomenal now though.

We called it "the mine field" instead of Meinken Field.

There probably wasn't a day, in season, that didn't see multiple games played on it. I seem to remembern one week back in the '60s, watching church league softball, Little League, and American Legion baseball, all played at "The Big Field." The best field maintenance in the world couldn't keep up with the wear and tear.

What a great upgrade for the schools and community. Really happy for Holmes, with their recent football stadium improvements too.
