April 16, 20206 yr Actually, there hasn't been a case of polio that originated in the US since 1979, and there's only been roughly 10 cases since 1970. Worldwide, in 2018 there were only 33 cases. It's been virtually eradicated by the vaccine. We get to reopen schools in 20 years then, once the vaccine has nearly wiped this out. I am being sarcastic of course. My polio comment was to set the extreme and also point out that a vaccine doesn't eliminate the virus. The point of this discussion is trying to figure out when schools open again. I will concede that opening in May is too soon based on today's facts. Waiting on a vaccine is way too late IMO.

In the case of polio, the vaccine did effectively wipe the virus in just a few years, with a rapid decrease in cases. That's not to say it would work like that in the case of the Corona Virus. Vaccines take so long to develop, that I think the biggest key here, is finding effective therapies and treatments. Until that happens, it's going to be tough to get back to normal.
April 27, 20206 yr With schools closed for this year, do people think they'll start back on time in the fall? I keep seeing lots of proposals floating around for mixed classes or students coming in one day and then being home the next. Just strikes me as hard to do social distancing inside of a school setting, especially among younger students. I also wonder if public school enrollments might increase because the economy could force parents who sent their kids to private schools to send them elsewhere. Could add more strain to the resources public schools face going into 2020-2021.
April 27, 20206 yr I find it difficult to predict what things are going to look like in one month let alone four months. We have to see how things develop as we re-open.

If the school year starts with online learning I would think all private schools will take huge hits in enrollment and we will likely see some of those private schools teeter on the edge of closing down.
