One of the tournament's most competitive first round contests, at least on paper, would be the Thursday night opener between 39th District Champion Mason County & 40th District runner-up Montgomery County. The former was certainly expected to be in the field, but the latter is a surprising entrant. Steve Wright's club pulled an upset over Bourbon County in the District opener to earn a Regional berth.

 

Mason County will travel to Winchester having lost just one game against the other 7 teams in field. The Royals dispatched Campbell County on January 16th (74-64), Augusta on January 21st (60-54) & again on February 27th (61-56), Pendleton County on January 24th (53-45), GRC on February 7th (60-53), & Bishop Brossart on February 18th (69-62). But the one loss? These Montgomery County Indians, who went to Maysville on February 4th and handed the Royals a 57-49 defeat. Brian Kirk's squad is spearheaded by powerful senior big man Alex Schalch's 18.2 ppg & 8.1 rpg. Xylon Frye, another senior, is the only other double digit scorer at 11.9 ppg.

 

Prior to its District Championship loss, Montgomery County had boasted an 8-0 record in the month of February, thanks in large part to the outstanding play of sophomore guard Hagan Harrison (17.6 ppg). In the aforementioned upset of Bourbon County in the 40th, Harrison turned in an epic performance of 38 points & 12 rebounds on 63.6% shooting. Junior forward Rickey Lovette is another dangerous player, pulling in averages of 13 ppg & 9.1 rpg.

 

Who wins this Thursday night clash: Mason or Montgomery?

Having a hard time deciding this one, in large part because who knows which Mason County team will show up.

For what it's worth, I think the Indians take this one as well, something along the lines of 66-59.
