It’s always amazed me how consistently bad South Hopkins (pre-consolidation)/Hopkins Central (post-consolidation) have been for the last 25-30 years.

That time frame is a bit of a stretch. Hopkins Central's first season was 1996 when they went 8-3. They followed with a 4-6 and 5-5 the next two years, and then an 8-3 record in 1999. They had winning seasons in six of the ten years between 2000-09, including their only ever playoff win, a 17-0 victory over Adair County in 2003. They've really struggled in the last decade, however, winning only 15 games from 2010-19.

I’m curious who those teams they beat were. Do you have a link? And an 8 win season, and a few 6 win seasons over 25-30 years does not change my opinion that overall South/Central Hopkins have been consistently bad for 3 decades.

I don’t have a link to anything not on the KHSAA scoreboard page. And I’m not trying to change your opinion. I’m simply pointing out that winning 4-6 games per year in the 90s and early 2000s is far better than averaging 1.5 wins per year in the last decade, no matter who the opponent was.

4 wins IMO is still bad. And I’d venture to say a lot of those wins were against other bottom dwellers like the Muhlenbergs, Todd Central, Webster Co., etc. Or against teams that were down a year or two and were also 4-5 win teams.

 

To me Hopkins Central has a large enough enrollment and a good enough pool of athletes to be better than they’ve been over 30 years.

I wonder if they have any athletes that grow up in the south end of the county but wind up going to high school at Madisonville instead. That could be part of the problem but I have no idea.

Most kids leave North to go to Central for lack of playing time. When kids transfer from Central to North they get denied by the school board and are often forced to sit out. i.e. - Dylan Mitchell this year past year.

Who said it was end all, be all? 99% of the state is rural so that excuse doesn’t hold water. They have had good athletes and I’m sure more walking the halls that do not come out and they consistently have been man handled by smaller county schools. Losing is contagious and it seems Hopkins Central is ok with it.
