Can anyone provide region by region total state championships.

If you’re really good provide the years won.

That's somewhat complicated. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association | KHSAA – Student-athletes of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow website has a list of all the region winners and state titleists, but keep in mind for many of the early years, there were 18 regions in the state.

Not to mention you have region re-alignments to deal with. For instance, Breckinridge County won in 1965 as a member of the 4th Region, and Glasgow did the same in 1968. But in 1965, Glasgow, and basically every team you'd think of in terms of the modern 4th Region, were in the 5th Region. So same region number, but not the same teams.

 

That said, for these teams were members of the 4th Region when they won:

The underlined teams were state champions that year. It doesn't have last year, but of course we know that was Trinity from the 7th.

I counted four 2nd region teams among the listed state champions.

Until looking at this thread, I didn’t realize St.X has been in 3 different regions. The 4th,6th, and 7th. Majority of time has been 7th.

Alright, my OCD wouldn’t let me breath until we had an answer to the original question, and thanks to @DragonFire the link that he provided made it possible to figure this thing out.

 

As you might notice from this list, some teams have actually won the State Championship multiple times, but out of different regions.

 

I was always lead to believe that the 9th Region hadn’t won a State Championship until 1981 with Simon Kenton, however it appears that in 1922 Lexington won while in the 9th Region, however the 9th Region as we know it is a Northern Kentucky region, while Lexington of course is not in Northern Kentucky.

 

From 1917-1921 there is no regional information regarding the state champs, but here are the winners of those years.

Didn't realize that only Mason County or Maysville other than Brooksville in the 20s was the only team from the 10th region to win state. Good info.

The 1st, 14th, and 16th regions could really use some good luck as they are the 3 standout regions who haven’t won the Sweet 16 for many years.

 

14th Region - Carr Creek - 1956 - 64 years

1st Region - North Marshall - 1959 - 61 years

16th Region - Ashland - 1961 - 59 years

 

The biggest gap in years for a region from winning the Sweet 16 is the 5th Region who went 66 years from 1927 (Millersburg) to 1993 (Marion County).

The best chance as far as I can tell for any of these regions to get off of the schneid and win the Sweet 16 is the 16th Region with Ashland who is presently tearing things up with a 12-0 record.

Schools like Heath, Sharpe, Brewers, Cuba, Corinth, Flaget, Midway, Hazel Green, Hindman, Carr Creek, and Inez all intrigue me, and mostly because I don’t know much about them, and wonder if any of them are still in operation.

 

Outside of Inez winning twice, all of these other teams won once.

 

I did read a book entitled “When Cuba conquered Kentucky” all about the 1st Region small school team the Cuba Cubs who against all odds won the 1952 Sweet 16.

 

I find a certain charm in these schools that I know nothing about, and feel like there must be some interesting stories about them, and considering that they likely weren’t powerhouses, perhaps good Cinderella stories too.

 

I recently chatted briefly with an older man with dementia, and his wife at an eye doctor’s office in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati, Ohio who were originally from Eastern Kentucky where they met in high school at Carr Creek where she was a cheerleader, and he kept repeating that they won the Sweet 16 in ‘56, and while some might’ve passed him off as an older man who had lost it, I was moved by his passion about it, and while he wasn’t really capable of telling me anything else tangible regarding it, I wanted so bad to hear more. His wife was with it enough to fill in some gaps, but I kept thinking that of all people for this man to bump into, and especially in Cincinnati where they could care less about Kentucky High School Basketball, he found a guy in me that really cared. You could see his eyes light up that I did care. It was really touching, and it’s stories like this about small schools from small towns who do the unthinkable and ultimately win it all that really intrigue and move me.

 

Would love to hear anything that anyone knows about any of these teams, or any team that you’d like to reminisce out.
