Early Season Surprises?

Featured Replies

With a week and a half to two weeks under our belts, are there any surprises in this young season that you didn’t see coming? We all have our preconceived thoughts of how we believe things would go going into a season and there always seems to be a few surprises that make you think about.

Let’s here your thoughts. What/who has surprised you this young season? I have a couple and will post them below.

Scott H.S. is 0-4 and average loss is by 30 plus points so far. Not a great start for the new head coach of the Eagles.

I guess when you lose your best player in the region and on your team for the season it will take its toll.

I'd say the one win Ryle Raiders are a surprise. I would also add the one loss Conner Cougars are bit of a surprise. Staying In the 33rd I'd think copper is better than most expected as is boone.

Ludlow maybe not the 5 and 0 start that's so surprising but they way they have done it. Won all 5 in very convincing fashion. Looks like the team is really playing together and have full embraced new head coach Stamm.

This isn't Stamm's first rodeo.

This was a contentious Ludlow team a year ago, albeit losing a lot to graduation.

The good early start points to a bright long-term future for the Lady Panthers.

Upcoming matches with NCC and Cooper will be an indicator if they are capable of running with the region's big dogs.

Ludlow is legit. Two stud players in the starting lineup and roll players who can also play a little. They will have a good season.

Simon Kenton is playing some really good ball right now. I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m surprised they are playing well but surprised they are playing to the level they are and beating teams by the margin they have.

I am pretty surprised by Ryle starting the way they have. I know Scherr was banged up for a few games but from what I have heard they have looked pretty disorganized and the offense is just stagnant. Hopefully when they get to full strength they will play again at the level we al thought because they have some great players.

I have been shocked by Boone’s scores. If they can make you play their style then they will win. They are small and they run. It is a track meet and fun to watch. I think Boone will get 3-4 surprising wins this year.

Stamm can coach. Ludlow graduated a few but returned their best player. As someone else said it will be interesting to see what they do with some better competition.

Last, I thought NDA would be better. Haven’t seen them actually play but haven’t been impressed with their scores and the people I have talked to that have seen them have said they thought they would be better.

Beechwood Lady Tigers are 4-1. All four victories are against teams that beat them last year. It's good to see some progress.

My first surprise was going to be Conner. Losing what they did from the type team they had. Coach Gambrel has these girls fighting/playing with a lot of heart. Should make things interesting in the 33rd.

Tough crowd. You thought 4-1 NDA would be better, but you haven't seen them play. A loss to Assumption and four wins by double digits, but okay.

Correct. I have not seen them play and yes I expected more. 4-1 and scored less than 40 pts in 3 games. 37 points against a 1-4 team. With Feldman and Bradshaw and other supporting cast I expected them to get up and go. Congrats to them for starting 4-1 but yes I was expecting more. Holy cross is middle of pack team in 9th and that’s their best win. I love Coach Murphy and have no doubt come February he will have them ready to go. Maybe I need to clarify and say I was surprised by their scores and expected them to get up and down and let it fly but doesn’t seem that way.

This is not a sarcastic question. This is a genuine line of discussion - what made you think they would be going up and down at a faster pace? Coach Murphy’s body of work supports that his teams will always be defensively focused and look for smart shots offensively, not necessarily the quickest shots.

This team is not like his teams at HC. Small and quick. I wouldn’t think you would slow it down with that. With all the big girls he had down at HC I completely understand. Again, maybe this was just my thought that NDA would get up and down. They will be prepared come February. Never question coach Murphy there. They gave Ryle something they weren’t expecting last year in the region. A lot closer than many expected. Just think they need to score more than 40 points if they are going to win the big ones.

I'm a little late to this thread, but after going 1-5 to start the season and 1-24 year last year, Coach Michael Menifee and his Nelson Co. Cardinals are 7-6, having won their home tourney and getting to the finals at Russell Co. before falling to Glasgow.

This was a very young team last year and still is this year, with just one senior and one junior, and most everyone else freshman and middle-schoolers, some of whom also started last year.
