Which is fair. Do you think it would be fair to say maybe Covcath played well below their ability against Highlands and that is the reason why the score was close? It seems like you want to say Highlands just played down in those other games, but played great against Covcath and fail to acknowledge maybe Covcath just played down and had a bad game.

 

There is something about the kind of rivalry like there is between HHS and CCH. Both teams have great defenses and that is what the game proved.

No doubt. However, if he is to say Highlands just played bad games against Conner and Cooper, but they showed what they could do against Covcath. Then I think it is fair to say maybe Covcath just had a bad game against Highlands, considering we all saw what Covcath can do when they are at their best by how they dominated LaSalle. So it seems like that is picking and choosing to fit a narrative that Highlands is a step above most still when games this year has not shown that to be true.

 

Covcath is obviously the top dog, but this year in NKY I really feel there isn't as much separation at all this year between teams ranked 2 through 8. I think some of the results this year shows that.

Personally I think Cooper, Conner, and Highlands all could beat each other on any given Friday. CovCath left 21 points on the board with wide open TD drops etc etc. I think all 3 of those teams are virtually even but that is just my opinion.

But when Cov Cath has drops, overthrows, etc every week, can you blame a close game on that? Other weeks they make enough plays and scores that it doesn't become an issue. Then in a close game it is an issue.

I definitely don't think CCH was 100% on their game against Highlands, but I also think Highlands showed much more of their potential in that game than they have in any game except maybe Knoxville Catholic.

I don't remember any dropped touchdown passes from the Lex Cath game, but I know Caleb had a handful of passes that were off, including one deep ball in the 1st or 2nd quarter intended for a wide open Michael Mayer, and another pass in the 2nd quarter that was over Zimmerman's head in the endzone. Cov Cath ended up having to settle for a field goal instead of a touchdown on that drive.

 

I think that's one of the two differences in the 2017 Cov Cath team and this year's:

 

1) Overall sharpness on offense. I think I recall 3 or 4...maybe even 5 touchdowns that have come back on penalties this season. I haven't looked for sure, but I feel confident thay his team has more penalties than the 2017 team did. And Jacob is definitely a good quarterback, but as a junior, his presence in the pocket and throwing downfield isn't what AJ's was as a senior. Reardon is also a solid receiver, but his hands just aren't quite as sure yet as a junior as Malachi Pike's were as a senior and D1 Jack Coldiron's were as a junior. There's no shame in that for Jacob or Reardon. They just need to keep developing, like they have.

The defensive backfield play has improved quite a bit since the LexCath game. The db rotaion that played against LaSalle did a very nice job. Due to people being banged up, I don't think they've played as a unit since then. The good news is, the injuries only need a few weeks to heal up and they will all be on the field again for the playoff run.

Our defensive backfield has improved proportionally during the regular season from beginning to end, agreed. Still, if I'm comparing 2019 to 2017, I would have to say the defensive backfield is the #1 difference between the defenses.

They weren't an "excuse" for a close score because CCH scored multiple times in those other games and they weren't close games. In the Highlands game where the offense only scored once, now the drops, overthrows, etc become a reason for only one score. I don't think that crutch can be leaned on because it didn't keep CCH from racking up points in those other games.

Caleb and the receivers are much more cohesive now than they were in August other than a few glaring drops in Ft. Thomas.
