Rose Hill 53 Boyd Co 50

Featured Replies

Refereeing is always in the eyes of the beholder. As I said before, Boyd County obviously came in with a "physical" game plan. Talentwise, it was the only way they could compete. It almost worked.

It may be well that Rose Hill played a zone defense with no press the entire game. If they had played man-to-man (woman-to-woman), as did Boyd County, it is likely that several more than just three would have fouled out.

I'm not faulting Boyd County's plan at all. As I said, it was the only way they could compete and it almost worked.

By the way, the game was 33 minutes rather than the usual 32 minutes. There was a clock problem with 6:48 remaining in the game. When it was "fixed", the clock indicated 7:48. It's a good thing for Rose Hill that it wasn't reset at 8:48.

Well said...and I agree. Thanks for noting the clock problem. A number of fans pointed out the problem at the time, but were ignored.

I can agree with you on that one. When a team is playing with another team that is simply out of their league talent wise, being overly physical with them is your only shot at winning the game, and as you said, it seemed to almost work for Boyd. It made the game much closer than any spectator would have thought it was going to be. I just really dont buy into the " region against Rose Hill theory." No one has it out for Rose Hill because they have went to state one time in the last who knows how many years. It really bothers me that someone thinks 27 fouls to 24 is considered "the refs keeping it close." Getting Queen and Terry in foul trouble is the key to beating this talented Rose Hill team. After watching this game, in my opinion Rose Hill may be the third best team in this region with Russell and Rowan leading the way.

Sorry if I offended you, but since RH's program has come unto itself, the only way for them to get an evenly called game is to play outside of the 16th region. Rose Hill has tremendous talent. Their biggest weakness is the depth of the bench. Opposing teams know this. To get Queen, Terry, and Faulkner on the bench is the best chance for a W against the Royals. I wouldn't mind the fouls on RH if the calls went both ways. But I'm tired of seeing the RH girls get beat to death on one end of the court, and called for playing patty cake on the other.

Shame on coach Fraley for letting his 5 foot nothin girls play so ruff against 2 6 foot all state canadates.

You may be correct, MBWC41 and, with the way Raceland handled West Carter at Olive Hill last night, they may be a contender, too.

As for the "everyone against Rose Hill" thought, I think it needs to be put into perspective. I have said on a number of occasions, often to area girls's coaches, that, at Bowling Green, every school in the Commonwealth except sixteen were rooting for Rose Hill. Who were those sixteen schools? They were, of course, LexCath and the other fifteen schools in the 16th Region. To date, no one has disputed my premise.

Now, I'm not saying that Rose Hill didn't have a lot of fans from other schools in this area. I am saying that those close to the individual programs were not fans of Rose Hill. Part of this is deserved because of the actions of some of us Rose Hillers. Part of it is because of the public-private fiasco. Part of it is because of the Russell transfers. Part of it is the attitude of many male coaches and athletic directors in the area. It adds up and it is merely part of the equation and, personally, I have no fault with it. I'm not going to take the approach of one of our "neighbors" and always use the lame excuse that others are "jealous". That is not the case any more than it is the case for our "neighbor". It is merely the give and take of partisanship. It goes with the territory.

The winning teams fan base is whining about the officials...why would anyone want to officiate? Refs have real jobs and family's they could devote all of their time too from November to March, not have to travel, not pay for all of their uniforms and equipment...or...they can officiate, sacrafice their time with their family, make 50-bucks to cover their expenses and get critized.

The number of officials continue to decrease, wonder why...the real loser is the family of officials. If the players don't have refs then they can't play.

Play call your own and see how bad it is...or make it take it...

How many free throws did Queen, Terry and Faulkner take. (23) that's a nice number of attempts for three people in one game?

And the refs kept it close...let's not forget about the 18 turnovers the same three had...

Very true. The refs have a job comparable to a polotician, no matter how well you do, someone is always going to be upset with you and complain.I thought at one time that I may have had an intrest in officiating, I called a mens softball game and decided I would never want to do anything like that again. It just blew my mind that someone could complain about officiating in a home game that THEY WON ! I can understand if the game was at Boyd and they were calling for home cookin', but from my view point the game was called very fair, as 27 to 24 fouls indicates. Some people will always find something to cry about I suppose.

Most referees are former athletes who try to extend their contact with competitive athletics through officiating. They are in a position where they continually make strictly subjective, spur of the moment decisions. Most close calls are supported by one-half of those in attendance and opposed by the other half. That is part of the process and they know it when they come out on the court.

On the other hand, like everything else in life, refereeing is subject to politics and political pressures. It shows in the assignment of officials for games and it shows in the fact that referees are human and, thus, have certain biases.

Our hope can only be that the politics and biases do not determine the outcome of a close game.

By the way, the total number of fouls in a game is not nearly as relevant as when the fouls are called and whom they are called against.

As for "homecooking", that has pretty much ended since the referees are assigned to the games. The home team has no control of that aspect of a game.

Rose Hill is unexperienced playing with a 3 star team and still working with the girls that are filling kala, sarah, and katys spots. but they will be a contender Boyd was RUFF they were hammering Laura everytime she shot a three.

Here we go, the bottom line is Rose Hill is A good team with Laura, and Queen. With out they are not.Give Boyd credit they played untill there was no time left on the clock. The game was called fair it had nothing to do with the Refs.

I can't believe that you would mention to an area coach (region coach) that the other schools (15 of which this coach was included) in the region were not rooting for Rose Hill and that coach admitted to you that his/her school wasn't rooting for Rose Hill.

Very true, Tiny, but I would add Britt to the other two. Rose Hill cannot win without her in the mix. I agree that Boyd County deserves credit for playing its game and sticking to its game plan. It was the only way they could compete and it almost worked. They did a commendable job.

Your right I did forget about Britt, she is a inportant part of the team.

I didn't say that it was affirmatively confirmed by those to whom I spoke. I said that it was not disputed or contradicted. Silence is often enlightening. Now, I didn't claim to have talked with all 15 other coaches but but I did talk with several. Do you honestly think that I am incorrect in my conclusion?

I am not complaining whatsoever about any hostile feelings. It is merely part of the process. I accept that without reservation.

Since my post from last night has been the subject of so many replies, and since the emotions of last night have had time to digest, let me clarify a few things. As stated in an earlier post, the refs are assigned to work the games. That elimanates RH, or any other school getting refs to work their home games they feel will give them an advantage. So the posts saying it is impossible to have a game called badly in your opponents favor on your home court don't hold water.

The point was also raised that it wasn't the # of fouls, but the timing of the calls, and the players being called. For Fraley, or any other coach, to approach a game with the attitude that the only way to win is to hack on their opponents stars, get them upset, and cause them to get into foul trouble, is not ethical coaching. To use the advantage of having a larger bench to work in fresh legs is a sound philosophy. To have the attitude that the larger bench means more fouls to give is conceding the fact your team is outmatched. Rose Hill won what was a sound victory until the end when BC made their "comeback" against RH's bench. These two teams always play physical ball against each other. To expect this year to be any different was just wishful thinking on my part. I'm just glad no one got hurt in this hack-fest. The refs need to keep better control of the games so the fouling does not get out of control.
