How many wins does your high school football team have?

Beechwood does not have 500 wins? That is surprising.

There is another surprising fact I noticed from your link. Beechwood has the third most championships with 14 but never had an undefeated season.

What year did Beechwood start playing? Trinity is the anomaly but everyone else is at least pre WW 2. Longevity is always a big help in these records.

The KHSAA doesn't have all of the teams with 500+ wins, and I confirmed with Joe Angolia at the KHSAA that they only have all-time info from the teams that have taken the time to fill out their submission form and turn them in.

I can't imagine that Beechwood doesn't have more than 500 wins.

Ashland 701.

Russell 611.

Raceland 556.

Paintsville 607.

Thanks to Aaron Snyder of the daily independent for the information.

316 of those wins came from Russell legend Ivan McGlone.

Edgar McNabb (who the Beechwood stadium is named after) was the first football coach for the Tigers, and started the team in the 1944 football season.

Years Coach Wins Losses Ties
1944* - 1959 Edgar McNabb 28 82 3
1960 - 1962 Gene Terry 13 10 1
1963 - 1964 George Rush 1 14 1
1965-1967 Tom Creamer 6 18 0
1968-1971 Roger Walz 20 14 2
1972 Jeff Slagle 10 2 0
1973-1947 Fred Mariani 20 4 0
1975-1990 Bernie Barre 135 54 0
1991-2001 Mike Yeagle 136 17 0
2002 Bob Burnett 12 3 0
2003-2005 Mike Yeagle 35 7 0
2006-Present Noel Rash 161 45 0

Fred Mariani came to Beechwood from being the head JV coach at Highlands, and every head coach since has been tapped from the assistant coaching staff at Beechwood. Program continuity (from a coach that learned in the Highlands program) stands to show for some of Beechwood Football's continued program success, no doubt.

I don't have any idea how many wins the Tigers have...maybe @Voice of Reason or @Beechwoodfan could shed a little more light there.

I know they weren't the most successful of teams until Coach Walz came on the scene, but being in their 76th season currently, and with the success they have seen in the last 30 years, I would think Beechwood has compiled 500 wins in that time. Even just looking at the years they have records listed on the KHSAA scoreboard (1998-2019), Beechwood has 238 wins.

My father in law was on the first Beechwood football team. I remember him saying that they only won one game while he was there. Husband played under Fred Mariani and was on the first team that went to the state finals in 1974. Prior to the seventies, I don’t think Beechwood had many, if any winning seasons. Would have to dig into some old yearbooks to verify this. Should be getting close to 500 wins by now though.

Let's back our way into this. Here are the records of the Beechwood coaches:

Noel Rash (2006-now) 135-90

Mike Yeagle (1991-2005) 171-24

Bob Burnett (2002) 12-3

Bernie Barre (1975-90) 135-54

Fred Mariani (1973-74) 20-4

Jeff Slagle(1972) 10-2

Roger Walz (1971) ?

Tom Kramer (1965-70) ?

Dave VanDearan (1963-64) ?

Gene Terry (1961-62) ?

Edgar McNabb (1945-60) ?

Total known wins on the above is 483. Safe to say Beechwood is over 500 but not sure of the exact total. Probably a little over 600 assuming not nearly as much success and fewer wins per season prior to 1971.

I was looking at the 1963-64 and 1964-65 yearbooks and they listed VanDearan as an assistant and Rush as the head coach. Is that switched? (Wouldn't be the strangest thing ever.) Regardless, the football team was 1-14-1 in that two year stretch.

Then the 1960-61, 1961-2, and 1962-63 yearbooks all show Gene Terry as head coach, and the football team was 13-10-1 in that period.

Lincoln County High School

46th Season (thru week 3 2019)

513 games

276 wins

237 losses

This program is a successor/continuation of Stanford High School’s football program, which played football continuously between 1901-1973 and was a charter member of the KHSAA.

Combined, that’s at least one game per year between 1901-2019.

That’s pretty impressive when you consider two 0-10 seasons in the late 60’s and two 1-9 campaigns in the John Griggs era.

A bunch of 15-0 seasons have a way of making up for those.....

I went back through the Enquirer, CJ, and KY Post archives and compiled Edgar McNabb's record:

1944: 5-2-0 *

1945: 3-6-0

1946: 1-6-0

1947: 0-6-0

1948: 3-4-0

1949: 2-4-1

1950: 1-6-0

1951: 4-1-1

1952: 3-6-0

1953: 5-3-0

1954: 0-7-1

1955: 1-7-0

1956: 2-6-0

1957: 1-5-0

1958: 1-7-0

1959: 0-8-0

In 1944, they only played one game against a varsity squad, and won the game 13-12 over Deer Park ( OH). So including that one win in the Tigers first season in 1944, McNabb's coaching record at Beechwood was 28-82-3.

Years Coach Wins Losses Ties
1944* - 1959 Edgar McNabb 28 82 3
1960 - 1962 Gene Terry 13 10 1
1963 - 1964 George Rush 1 14 1

2002 Bob Burnett 12 3 0
2003-2005 Mike Yeagle 35 7 0
2006-Present Noel Rash 161 45 0

*Only one varsity game played in 1944.

Caldwell County is 418-285-11 since consolidation in 1954. I'm not sure if Princeton Butler High School and Princeton High School records before that can be included going back to 1911, but that would push Caldwell well past 500.

Also of note, of the 714 games played by Caldwell County, I have been at the last 378.

Noel Rash has 147 wins at Beechwood. That includes tonight's win over Corbin.

Coach Rash also has only 39 losses, include the two losses this year.

Coach Rash's record at Beechwood is 147-39 as of tonight.

I saw that Highlands had their 925th program win last night, in addition to seeing that Boyle County had their 499th program win last night. So I figured I'd update this thread.

I pulled the KHSAA leaderboard for all-time wins (their list with minimum 500 reported wins is update through the end of the 2020 season). I went ahead and added in the results of the 2021 & 2022 seasons, plus the results for this season up through last night, Week 6 (September 22, 2023).

St. Xavier pulled ahead of Danville for overall wins at the end of the 2022 season. Owensboro with a good chance of tallying their 800th program win this season, and Bowling Green also has a puncher's chance at getting their 750th program win this year. Trinity still leads the teams on the leader board in winning percentage with 77.6% winning since the beginning of their football program in 1955. Highlands is in second for winning percentage with 76.3% winning since their start in 1915.

No word on what other teams have broken the 500 wins threshold since the conclusion 2020 season.

941 Male (1893- ) 941-339-49 (70.8% winning)
937 Mayfield (1919- ) 937-264-32 (75.9% winning)
925 Highlands (1915- ) 925-261-26 (76.3% winning)
818 Paducah Tilghman (1904- ) 818-356-25 (68.3% winning)
810 St. Xavier (1917- ) 810-314-20 (70.8% winning)
806 Danville (1924- ) 806-277-34 (72.2% winning)
796 Owensboro (1893- ) 796-396-30 (65.1% winning)
743 Bowling Green (1922- ) 743-354-35 (65.6% winning)
740 Ashland Blazer (1900- ) 740-415-41 (61.9% winning)
728 Somerset (1907- ) 728-426-43 (60.8% winning)
714 DuPont Manual (1892- ) 714-479-37 (58.0% winning)
685 Middlesboro (1921- ) 685-369-30 (63.2% winning)
685 Glasgow (1918- ) 685-395-29 (61.8% winning)
683 Hopkinsville (1905- ) 683-507-33 (55.8% winning)
679 Hazard (1926- ) 679-363-20 (63.9% winning)
664 Bardstown (1912- ) 664-295-16 (68.1% winning)
663 Trinity (1955- ) 663-184-7 (77.6% winning)
634 Russell (1926- ) 634-396-24 (60.2% winning)
620 Paintsville (1923- ) 633-379-27 (60.9% winning)
614 Beechwood (1944- ) 614-272-7 (68.8% winning)
609 Frankfort (1911- ) 609-474-30 (54.7% winning)
532 Newport Central Catholic (1935- ) 532-388-9 (57.3% winning)
