What is everyone's thoughts on the Colts not trying to recoup the money Luck owes back to them? A $25MM parting gift is a nice move, which I assume Irsay is looking at as an investment if Luck were ever to change his mind. I would have had 0 issues with them getting back the money from Luck. Do the other owners look at Irsay and say, "What the hell are you thinking? Just because your guy retired and you hand over $25MM, it is going to make me look like a bad guy when I do not do the same."

The Colts have been ultra-secretive about Luck's injury status. To this day we still do not know to what extent he is injured, but we can only assume it is much worse than a "high ankle injury" or whatever else they kept feeding the media/fans. Naturally, no person was buying what they were selling, and paying customers and consumers of all things Indianapolis Colts and the NFL had an interest in knowing what was up. Schefter was probably one of about 50 media members trying to get to the bottom of it all. Again, the "disservice" done in this situation were the staff/players that let Schefter know. I guess you could argue they, by tipping him, were trying to advance their careers. Schefter sits on a confirmed story like this he gets fired.

Luck had multiple stakeholders he wanted to be the one to announce it to. Teammates, fans, owners and family. To allow the athlete to do so used to be called "professional courtesy". I guess in today's world it has become acceptable to advance your own career..... (just doing what I get paid for).....no matter the lasting damage it might cause others. Price of being a celebrity in today's world of social media.

 

So you want a media guy to risk his career to help Luck? His job is to get the news, and especially a story as big as this to be the first to break it is big news. He probably gets in big trouble if he hears this and just sits on it. Especially if he sits on it, and the news comes out anyways by a competing company.

 

So you are way off base here complaining that he was in the wrong to report it. Now if you want to complain about the person who told him, then I would agree with you. The person who told him, is the one who cost Luck the chance to break the news on his terms.

I don't know your profession, but I assume your profession is not in the media. Where being the first to break a big story like that, is exactly what their job is.

I am not saying I would have booed Andrew Luck, but I think it is unfair to paint this narrative given nobody had heard from the Colts or Luck on his status, mental or physical, all pre-season. When you are in Luck's professional position, you are subjected to a different level of scrutiny that none of us can relate to. The rewards are nothing we can relate to, either.

 

Here is what the fans knew. They read of a tweet by Adam Schefter which said Luck is retiring because he is "mentally worn down, and now checking out." They didn't have a heart-felt Andrew Luck press-conference of him in tears, had no indication of mental demons or injury status (which I personally think he is over rehabbing), nor any context; yet, we have to be so hyper-sensitive, we are now to get a tweet in the fourth quarter of a pre-season game that says a guy is "mentally worn down, and now checking out" as he is palling around on the sidelines and we are supposed to provide a "standing ovation," says Aaron Rodgers?

 

For the record, I support Luck in his decision and post-playing career and hope he gets the care he needs.

If it is true that Luck told his teammates on Friday, then everything related to the "leak" and media and fan booing falls squarely on the shoulders of Luck. He mismanaged this announcement. Once you tell the team, too many people know to control the info. If I am Luck and I am managing this, I handle it this way:

 

1. Once decision is made, make sure family and those closest to you know first.

 

2. Tell management at the Colts.

 

3. Tell teammates in person if possible.

 

4. Public announcement.

 

Numbers 3 and 4 need to happen within rapid succession, the same day at the least and hopefully within hours. I would tell the team. As I was telling the team, I would have the team media rep tell media onsite there will be a press conference immediately after practice/team meeting. There I would make the public announcement for the fans so they hear it first hand from me.

 

If he does all that, he gets a standing ovation at the game if he chooses to attend it.
