Speaking of Puig, can anyone explain to me how this extra pick works if the Reds decide not to trade him, then offer him a deal that he doesn't take? I'm a little confused how that works. Puig is 10 for his last 49 (.204) with zero HR's in that span.
July 30, 20197 yr I knew Dietrich hasn't done much since his 3 HR game, but I just read this: Dietirch is now 16 for 100 since that 3-HR game vs Pirates on May 28. 2 HR, 8 RBI, 14 HBP. #Reds Woof. Knew it was bad, that’s worse than what I thought!! 6 1/2 games out, let’s go, need to win 5-6 more in a row!!

July 30, 20197 yr It's just too diluted, 2 maybe 4 too many teams. My thoughts exactly. If I publicly blame expansion, I will be ridiculed as living in the past, which I like to do. YES, Too much dilution. What we now accept as "Major League Baseball" is infused with minor league talent posing as Major Leaguers, and I think it shows most on the pitchers mound.

Except the difference is, this is who Dietrich is. He is 30 years old and he is doing what his career tells us he does: hit below .250 with power. This year he has given up a little bit in average for more power. There is a well established scouting report and book on how to pitch to Dietrich. For VanMeter, he is only 24 with room for growth and improvement. I don't doubt he will have a rough stretch at some point because everyone does. Plus, as you say, the scouting reports will find ways to attack him that he will have to overcome. But we don't know yet how he will battle through that and who he will become as a hitter. We do know that with Dietrich.

Pretty much the philosophy for 95% of the hitters now. Screw the BA, it's all about how many dingers you can hit. Which is sad, IMO. Go ahead and call me old fashioned. (Now get off my lawn!)
July 30, 20197 yr Pirates get two in the first As Bell doubles in both. Reds set up down and in and Roark misses out over the plate for a double. I can't blame the pitchers any more for that cause that is where the dugout tells Farmer to set up. Bucs up 2-0.
July 30, 20197 yr Reds threaten but Puig strikeouts on a pitch a foot outside. He is just plain lost. Leans away from the plate when he swings and the lunges as he swings. His trade valve is probably not very high.
July 31, 20197 yr Just when they give you hope they’re ready to make a run they always produce a stinker and that’s the way this looks!! 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and we don’t score, leadoff double in the 2nd and we don’t score (why not play Van Meter and give Puig a day off, kid has been on fire and Puig has struggled for awhile now!!) Then Roark doesn’t cover first and it costs us 3 more in the 2nd, Suarez had a chance to make 2 plays and doesn’t come up with either one, they just tease us!!
July 31, 20197 yr Reds now down 5-0. Roark having trouble getting Marte and Bell out and a lot of 3-2 counts. Our trade bait players are not doing so well as the trade line approaches.
July 31, 20197 yr Pirates erase those runs with their own two run homer. They may be the end of Reds comeback. Bucs 7-2 in 6th inning.
