Great Regional Moments...

Featured Replies

What say you? The only rule is you had to be there. Tell us the place. The players. The year. What made it a great moment. Let's relive those goose bump, standing room only moments from previous regional matchups.

My memory is bad and I am not that old. But, can someone confirm they Simms vs Fogle at the Fieldhouse in an early game around year 1991 was an epic matchup. I also watched Fawns will his team to State with multiple huge shots in 1995, at the Feildhouse. Some of my favorite memories were watching the State runner up and State Champ teams from Holmes with my Dad and Brother.

2006. At Knott. 14th Region. Sitting behind the bench of the city school with my cousin coaching on the bench, as an assistant. Jackson lost to Hazard that night, but it was a lot fun and something I will always remember.

There are MANY on the list. I'll go with a recent one.

2016 regional first-round game at Montgomery County. Mason County and Campbell County. Campbell had won the regular-season matchup by 16 at Mason County.

Pig Williams hits a buzzer-beating 27-footer to win it, 72-70. First high-school game our Australian future son-in-law attended.

My first year of coaching at East Carter HS I was the 9th grade coach and an assistant on the Varsity. In our first game we defeated Rowan Co. 66-60 in OT. Then is one of greatest semi-final games in 16th Region history East Carter defeated Boyd Co. 60-59 in 4 overtimes. Then we defeated Morgan Co. 76-66 to give the school its first ever regional title and trip to the State Tournament. That was a great couple of weeks that I'll always remember. Nice thread thanks for starting it!

Why did you give up coaching after that excitement?

Hey when it happens in your first year its all downhill from there. lol

No seriously I continued to coach there until the mid 1990's and I still work with basketball today I have a 16 team 7th and 8th grade girls and boys middle school conference I take care of plus some other things so I still stay busy.

My first year going to State tournament while keeping book for the boys in 2006. Win over Clark County.

Also, who can forget the three from Jake Ohmer out of the deep corner. From the scorers table, I could not even see him shoot it.

Boyd County's Tyler Zornes drilling a buzzer beater in '99 to beat Ashland in the 16th Region finals in Morehead is the obvious standout moment for me. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think he released the shot a couple of steps inside the half court line.

Ashland had scored a go-ahead basket moments earlier. Boyd inbounded the ball to Zornes, who cut around a screen and darted toward center court. He took a couple of steps past mid-court and let it fly. I thought the roof was going to come off of Ellis T. Johnson Arena.

I didn't really have a rooting interest in the game - Ashland was Ashland and almost everybody outside of Tomcat country had a certain disdain for them; And Zornes was as arrogant as any athlete in the area at the time. But the ending was like something out of a Hollywood script. Everybody in the place knew where the ball was going. Not only could Ashland not deny Zornes the ball, but he actually canned the shot to crush the hearts of Boyd's most hated rival. It was an incredible moment.

2006 4th region tournament semis. Trey Shirley from Metcalfe made a deep three at the buzzer to beat Greenwood sending Metcalfe to the region finals for the first time since the late 80’s.

2016 Seventh Region final at Valley High School. Ballard v. Trinity. Down 3 with 1 second to play, Ballard's Jake Ramsey rebounds a missed free throw and throws a full court shot that goes in to tie the game to send it into overtime. I have been to a lot of games at a lot of different levels, but I have never heard a gym or arena explode like the Valley High School gym exploded when that shot went in. Trinity collected itself and won the game in overtime.

Was behind the Greenwood student section waiting to move in for the Central game. What a glorious shot!
