You know oneijoe, actually I made a mistake in stating the year of the Ballard state championship team. It was 1977 that they won the state tournament with Lamp and Raker. The 1976 State champion was Edmonson County who came out of nowhere. Considering that I graduated in '76, that should have been the one year that I would not have gotten things mixed up, but oh well........

 

I think the last second halfcourt shot you are thinking about was made by Paul Andrews in 1982 when Laurel County beat North Hardin in the finals.

1961 Ashland High School team (not Blazer) was one of best if not the best. All five starters did, indeed, receive D-1 scholarships- Conley (UK), Sergent (Morehead but The Baron screwed up because Harold should have been at UK as well as Mr. Basketball instead of Randy Embry; check Harold's statistics at Morehead and you'll agree); Hilton (West Point), Smith (UC), and Cram (Tampa, I believe). Sixth and seventh men, Sexton and Daniels, were top notch, also.

Loved Breckenridge Co..either 1985 or 1995. No big names...but they were like a well oiled machine...they knew what each player was going to do ..it was amazing to watch them.

 

That was the best TEAM I have ever seen. Not the best team with great players but the best I have ever seen as far as working together and not caring who got the credit for anything. Just a group of guys all buying into the system and playing their roles to the max.

The 1981 Simon Kenton Pioneers was a story book season.October 11 1980 there was an explosion at the school.We had to go to a diffrent school for 3 month's going from 2:00 til 8:00.So it was hard to even have a practice,and nowhere to practice.So it was amazing that they could make a run at the sweet sixteen much less win it!:banana: They might not be the best team to win the Sweet Sixteen but it sure was a storybook season.There is a book out that talks about the whole 1980-1981 school year,its very interesting.Its called "PIONEER SPIRIT" :thumb:

I would venture to say any state championship season is a "storybook season". I played against Troy and the boys, they were great! I'd like to read that book. Where is it being sold?

Actually Hopkinsville won it in 1985, and they were very good. They went to the final eight in 1986, another good team. Maybe you've got the years a bit confused.

Very good team, with a good draw.

Male team in 1970 or so with Bill Bunton (6-7), Henry Huskey (6-4), Larry Haralson (6-9) and William "GeeGee" Gordon were among the best I've seen, as far as having a combination of talent and teamwork. Later Male teams with Wesley Cox and co., and then Griffith and Turner were also top of the line.

 

Owensboro teams with Thruston and Higgs were good.

 

Lafayette with Minnifield, Wilson, Johnson, was dominant.

 

Can't go back much before 1970 or so, but have seen nearly all of them since then.

 

PRP teams have always been a good combination of talented and well-disciplined and well-coached squads...for the most part, though, they have been a bit undersized.

 

I will say that, in my opinion, the overall quality of the entire field of the state tournament is way down in recent years, when compared to the overall field in years past.

 

We don't have the marquee players in the state right now that we had 30 years ago, either...every year in the 70s there was a marquee player(s)somewhere in the state that always seemed to make it to the state tournament...Cox, Higgs, Thruston, Griffith, Turner, Durand Macklin, Lamp, Raker, Eaves, etc...

 

 

 

The very best teams that we have right now in the state, are probably as good as the very best teams 30 years ago, but the depth of quality teams is nowhere near where it used to be.

 

Perhaps though, in another 30 years, people will reminisce about the Mason Co. team and Chris Lofton or the Breck team, or the ????????

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Out of all the teams mentioned how many of those teams won it back to back like Fairdale did with the same nucleus of players ( Brown, Morris and Turner )????????????????
