Elton John: Ban religion

Featured Replies

In today's Enquirer, (I couldn't find a link), Elton John says the following:

Organized religion fuels anti-gay discrimination and other forms of bias

"I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people. I would ban religion completely. Organized religions doesn't seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings." In the London Observer's Music Monthly Magazine.

John also said religious leaders have failed to do anything about world conflicts. "Why aren't they having a conclave? Why aren't they coming together?"

I heard about his comments over the weekend. After seeing your post, I did a search and here are some links that I found.

He must have made the statement on either Friday the 10th or Saturday the 11th.

Just for the record, I don't agree with his comments.

Thanks for the links.

Communism banned religion and that led to millions being killed.

Nice faulty logic.

Organized religion does form opinion on anti gay matters, pro choice matters and I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with organized religion instructing their masses to vote a specific party based on values issues alone. Heck I have a problem with any non political organizations instructing indivudals how to vote.

So what is your stance on labor unions?

For my money, there is nothing more entertaining than listening to celebrities elaborate on how to solve the world's ills. Ok Adolph, after you ban religion, what's next? John's comment about having a "meeting" to solve world violence is priceless.

I would like to see a DVD devoted solely to political statements made by celebrities.

Madonna

Rosie O'Donnell

Alec Baldwin

Susan Sarandon

Tim Robbins

Sean Penn

and more.............

This has the potential to be a very funny flick.

Is there anyone on in the world who has any interest in anything that Elton John says? Surely not. On the other hand, he is a strange little being.

Nice faulty logic.

Its true, communist killed many millions of people and that did have a lot to do with it.

I prefer to think of it as honesty — the ugly truth

Communists killed millions of people because of evil dictators (Stalin, Pol Pot). Their banning of religion had absolutely nothing to do with it. They were just crummy people.

Communists would also killed people because of their religious beliefs, not only because they were just "crummy people"

Funny, really! I'll guess he'll have to play the piano in eternity in hell and sound like I was playing it. And I can't even play chopsticks. Well, one things for sure, he'll not convert to Islam, that whole bunch of virgins waiting on him probably ain't that appealing!

I really don't know why I'm jumping into the middle of this...

Human beings are wired to believe in something. Right, wrong, indifferent, we do form a belief system centered upon certain things. Some believe in God, some believe in science, some believe in money and power, some believe in the collective power of the state, some believe their own press releases and the power of celebrity.

It is impossible for a healty human not to believe in something.

I agree with both Jim and Bandit.

Stalin, Lenin, Pol Pot, etc. were evil, but they did act out of their own twisted belief system. They acted out against those of a belief system that contradicted their own. Religion, even of a sick and twisted variety was at the root of the slaughter of millions.
