Will Pittsburgh Fire Mike Tomlin?

Recommended Posts

Oh yes so outside of 2 HOFers the defense was just above average. That defense was legit only team that could rival it was Baltimore.

The 2002 TB Buc, the Legion of Boom, Gangreen, and a few others have something to say about that. It was a great defense. But that Steelers team could get it done on Offense too. Remember, Warner lit that defense up in the Super Bowl.

Again, I'm not saying Tomlin is the best coach ever. He's clearly had some moments where you would question his "greatness". But purely by numbers, and the success he's had, especially in comparison with other coaches during his time, he's clearly at least top 3 or 4.

At the time they were playing they were the best. They aren’t the greatest ever. All NFL coaching jobs aren’t created equal. Coaching in Pittsburgh is idiot proof. You are surrounded by the best people in the business. Combine that organization with the rosters Tomlin was gifted by Cowher and you have a situation that almost every coach would flourish in.

You’re right about me personally disliking Tomlin. Everything he does and says has always rubbed me the wrong way.

Hence, your entire take is slanted against him. Tomlin by any reasonable measure has been a very successful NFL coach.

No other coach* over .620 winning percentage.

*Coaches on the job over 3 years.

So idiot proof that it took 13 years for Cowher to win his one superbowl. And in the previous 12 years, his playoff record was 8-9. And don't forget, he went 8-8 and missed the playoffs the year after the Super Bowl, his final year of coaching. People were having these same conversations about Cowher at the same point in time. The only difference is that Tomlin's track record is better at the same point. And now Cowher is viewed as legendary, and Tomlin is just a below average, overated coach.

Cowher isn’t viewed as legendary. But Cowher drafted a HOF QB in Roethlisberger

and gifted him and the best defense to the league to Tomlin. It’s pretty hard to screw that up.
